no matter how thick, cannot smother you

The ash hung in the air like an omniscient smog, overwhelming and suffocating. The trees burned and simmered, the dying flames licking at the soot like a hungry wolf nipping at the heels of wounded livestock.

Far above the suffocating air he sat, perched atop a stoney outlook in the low-lying section of the Veneror Peak and Arma Mountain outcroppings. Piercing eyes were trained - nay, fixated - on the Viride forest as it smouldered in the distance. Something gnawed at the back of the gryphon's mind, the crest of feathers along his neck and spine raising minutely as he sat within pensive silence. He was searching - waiting - looking for something...

Like a flash of flame catching on new kindling, he found it. Found herEulalie! he called, his voice strong and firm yet caring and soothing. Wings outstretched, and within seconds, he was airborn.

He knew where she was - knew it in his gut, in his bones. And while there was no familiar pang of danger that accompanied his discovery of her, he.. he had to be sure. Had to see it with his own eyes - see her golden coat unmarred of ashes, her skin untouched by the singe of burning wood and falling branches. He had to know she - and her family - were alright.

He crested above the Illuster meadow, towards the Court. His heart had initially pulled him to search the Forest, but he knew deep down that she was not there. She would not dare venture too close to such a dangerous place... not with her little ones, he was sure of it. And if she had? Well, lets just say that Tabbris was not above gentle chastizing and stern looks.

Eventually, he did not just feel her. He smelled her - fine tuned ears and sharp eyes turning in the direction he knew she was. Dark eyes searched... until he found her, and down he went, wings flaring as he approached the ground. Eulalie... are you okay? he reached out to her, the touch of her mind heavy on his own.

As he weaved inbetween the crowdgoers, searching for her, he saw the grouped individuals within the Court. Saw the wounded. Saw the parched. Saw the fleeing animals that had taken refuge into the safe haven... and while his concern lay with His, his heart warmed. His soul had not chosen wrong.

Tabbris searches for @Eulalie while perched atop the Arma Mountains, needing to not only meet her... but ensure her safety. He is able to pinpoint her within the Court, and quickly flies over the ash-riddled air to unite with his Bonded.

Hope

begins in the dark.

Eulalie knew the twins hated nothing more than to be cooped up inside for so long, but she would not risk their lives by letting them outside to breath in the toxic, smoke filled air. They were growing listless and restless, however, and the sunshine woman knew she had to do something quick before they were all driven mad with cabin fever. So, she draped a heavy cloth over her nose and stepped outside the castle walls and into the court to hunt down something to bring home for her children, to keep them occupied. She could not know that something would find her first.

The mother pressed her way through the crowd, carefully weaving around fellow citizens. So many lives had been stricken by this terrible wildfire, so many grown weak or ill as a result of the ash and smoke filling the air, covering the sun. And it was not just the equines who were affected. So many creatures big and small filled the court after having escaped from the forest. She watched as caretakers laid out water and treats for them, as they tended the wounded and eased the anxieties of the fearful. Although things looked bleak now, here in the loving, caring gestures of those surrounding her, Eulalie saw hope. Hope that they would make it through this disaster and be stronger and more bonded for it.

She thought she heard a voice call her name, distant but strong and she paused in surprise. Who? She wondered, but when she turned there appeared to be nobody around seeking her attention. Eulalie brushed it off, continuing her search. She attempted to track down toys and games and any sort of trick she could come up with that would occupy her children for even a day longer. She was afraid that even the staff, though they seemed amused by Anemone and Regis’ antics, would soon grow tired of entertaining the twins.

After a short while she had collected quite a few things and was preparing to return to the castle when she heard it again, the same voice calling her name. This time when Eulalie stopped and looked around she knew that she was not imagining it. Somebody was searching for her, and yet each pair of eyes she met smiled and moved along. Her expression was quickly slipping into concern. Perhaps she was just overtired with the twins and doing her part to help the court get through this difficult time. Then a flash of bright white and mahogany caught her attention and something pulled at her, drawing her closer toward it. Another equine pulling a cart moved out of her line of sight and there, standing on the other side was a magnificent creature. Truly, like nothing she had ever seen before.

Their dark eyes met and Eulalie felt some strange, unexplainable kinship, like they had known each other for a long time. Like they were meant to find each other at this moment. The golden haired woman believed in such things as fate, and this felt like fate. It felt right, somehow. ”I’ve found you,” the voice, again, and now she recognized it as his. It was warmth and pride and strength. Eulalie could not help but smile, and wonder, but how? “My name is Tabbris, and I’m here to watch over you and those that you love.” And the silliest thought crossed her mind, that certainly this would occupy her children for days once they discovered him.
