orado’s childhood is rife with loss and misinformation, causing a rather distant and untrusting mature creature. Born in the principality of Dathwara, he is the illegitimate son of the “Golden Lord”, Maryusar. The Lord’s offspring are renowned for their coats of pale yellow, cream and gold, as well as gold flecking throughout their coats. Dorado, or as he was born, Aurumetus, was born with a half of his golden lineage, part of his body coated in the creamy gold-flecked coat of his father and siblings. As an illegitimate colt, he was brought to the Golden Lord’s house at a young age and made into a ward of his father. He was told his mother no longer desired him and that as a child of the Golden Lord he would be safe if he learned to defend his father with his life. This was just one of many lies that would damage the young colt.
Raised with a better education than most, Aurum was surprisingly accepted amongst his siblings, although it would be far more accurate to say he was tolerated. He excelled at the humanities, literature, history, and music among the subjects he enjoyed. He would often tutor his siblings, even helping them with their homework or assignments when they procrastinated, receiving no remuneration for the extra work he put in. All to please
them. Once he reached his teens he was expected to learn to train and fight for his father. While he was fairly successful in his efforts in physical endurance, his fault lay in the fighting. As a child he was unable to hurt another creature, and that carried into his teens. Any time he was forced to harm something, he would withdraw further into himself, stealing away from the scene of the act as quickly as possible. Retreating to his books, his saving grace came in the form of his sister, Lylta. While she never really gave him the affection he craved, she at least gave him a safe space to reveal his woes, and for that he was grateful.
His inability to be what his sire wanted him to be eventually culminated when his father confronted him in front of an entire court of nobles. The resulting scolding exposed Aurum to the harsh truth that his mother had in fact wanted him and he was forcefully removed from her care because of his father’s notion that his children should all be watched carefully, lest one of them ruin him.
This sudden understanding of how his life truly came to be made Aurum furious, enough to yell back at his father, an action that any who knew Maryusar would know as one of the ultimate wrongdoings. Aurum was told under no circumstances that he was ever permitted to return to the Golden Lord’s court, nor was he allowed to remain anywhere within the principality. Spitting at his father on his way out, Aurum left in a huff and took only what was rightfully his, some books and the golden jewelry marking him as a child of Maryusar.
His eventual travels left him jaded and withdrawn, though in keeping up appearances he told his stories and acted well enough to keep any questions at bay. Ever the wanderer, he began to stop introducing himself as Aurumetus, finding that the name “Dorado” made him sound less aloof (even if his manner was anything but common).
