RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Maximus - 06-12-2019

His creature fear makes his wary, eyeing the beaten path, the one he had so impulsively chosen to walk—had there really been a choice?—his heart racing; rabbit's skull thumping rhythmically against his breastbone as he moves; the lub-lub of that preternatural pulse joining. Three heartbeats, synchronised in his chest and mind, imploring him, driving him towards something mad and surely beautiful. The creature fear—the preything’s instinct—had never been strong enough, was unravelling itself on the tides of curiosity and the arrogant idea that he is more than mortal and so any adventure that calls is just that.

And not a foolish pursuit of an unknown, unknown.

His overlong hears peel forward, flicking as the sound begins now to thrum around him, closing in, squeezing him with each measured pump of its otherworldly heart drawing strange, irised blood through the air and through him, making them singular. One. The earth below and above, the sky, the far-seeing stretch of land that winds like a ribbon, ever hastening him to a passageway into a rift in the fabric of dreams. Can nothing ever just be normal? he thinks, but the thought is overcome by the furl and unfurl of his adventurous nature, like waves over rocks, they erode those figments of doubt and make them bright flames of seeking, instead.

He comes to the bridge, breathless and wanton and thrillful. His wide, red eyes draw across the bridge, through the passers-by and waiters that he joins now. He strides the peculiar arch of the bridge to a wall of ivy, woven like a wonderful tapestry of entwined leaves, illusory and dark, breathing with a hot throated exhales. It is here that the once-princeling coming to a stunned halt before the wide, gaping jaws of that queer, sealed entranceway, seeing now the myriad tiny hearts in clutches of red. He leans forward, lips searching out, but never touching, never laying upon the smooth-looking, pulsating skin. He turns to ask someone what is going on, but at that moment, silence falls like a heavy, wet blanket, and everyone’s heart seems to still. Breath, shallow. Bodies, limp under the weight of that sudden cessation, his ears droop to the sides, head bowing to a force unknown.

It unravels. In beautiful cascades of overripe fruit and perishing vines; a splay of irised pearled scattered like blood drops across the bridge. He takes a half step back, watching the pearls as they pool around his hooves and then run off down the arch of the bridge and drip-drip away…

What is revealed—what is woven and unwoven with threads of the oddest worlds—hitches his breath in his throat, leaves him parched and shaken to his core. It is transcendent, alluring, it draws him into its hot jaws, hooves dragging first in dirt and then in soft sands of a universe beyond his own. The air feels different, the birds that watch them swell in like pilgrims are queer things of bone and stone, of gems and of bright flashes of fire that consume and spill smoke in their wake. His gaze draws high to the vaulted blue sky and the thick canopy of wide, frilled leaves beyond; to the licking froth of the tidal waves that damped the effulgent sand to a bone-colour.

What in the world...

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Lasairian - 06-12-2019

is this a natural feeling or is it just me bleeding?
He was late to the party that was the ivy wall coming down and the berries popping pearls, but Lasairian wasn't so sure that was a bad thing. Sounded like it took awhile to happen, which would have been less than fun to deal with while within a crowd of onlookers, and Lasairian figured that whatever happened would happen, and him being there to see it wouldn't change all that much. He could go once there was a bit of a lull, and have a moment to breathe when he took a break to look at something. Of there were plants to inspect, they were quite possibly trampled by now, but maybe the mystery of a new island would preserve things better.

He wasn't holding his breath for it, though. With all of the others who had been checking out the odd bridge before it had even begun to show signs of decaying ivy and bursting berries, the whole thing was likely to have been packed the moment it was open enough for equine to get through. Lasairian couldn't blame the others for being curious, because of course he also was, but he knew it wasn't always better to be there so soon. He would much rather have a look when it was calmer, more empty, easier to wander around and look at things in leisure. If he couldn't see two feet in front of him, it wasn't going to work out.

But now the days had passed enough that Lasairian felt he would be able to go and look, see what all the fuss was about; in regards to this island. There had to be something out there about it to get such odd circumstances surrounding it, right? At least that was what Lasairian was thinking whdn it came to something like this. So over the bridge he had gone, still eyeing the waters, still curious about whales and whatever spined and finned things were out there under the waves. Nothing he felt like meeting up close and personal, of course. No, he would rather not have to be in that kind of probably dangerous situation.

The closer he got to the end of the bridge, the more he could feel the pull of the island on himself. It felt different over here, and that was something Lasairian wanted to keep a keen eye on. He still went, still kept going and entered the island with it's bone white beach and the strange birds and creatures on it. He was most astounded by the odd flowers and the metallic gleam of them; the other plants that looked so strange and new, things he wanted to touch and explore, but wasn't sure it was safe to do so. In and in he went, feeling compelled to do so.

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Katniss - 06-12-2019

Day by day, Katniss returns to the bridge only to be met with the wall of ivy. She has this gut feeling that something is waiting beyond this ivy wall, but she has no way of knowing just what it is. She can only have hope that one day, the ivy will spread open wide and allow her through so she might explore the other side. There is a part of her that tells her what lies ahead is dangerous but there is another that tells her it might be beautiful. Katniss has never been afraid of the unknown, and so she keeps returning to the bridge.

On this particular afternoon, as Katniss approaches where the wall of ivy should rest, she cannot help but notice that the path is full of flower petals (petals she did not remember being on the ivy) and dried up leaves. She sees pearls that have been thrown around haphazardly and she picks up a couple and puts them securely in her satchel. And when she comes to where she knows the ivy wall once was, she can only see the beautiful island that lies ahead.

Steps and slow and cautious as she walks over the bridge. Feet sink down into sands a shade of white brighter than anything in Novus. Eyes look around at the beautiful palm trees that seem to be rich with fruit. She follows her instincts and moves further into the island, leaving the bridge behind her.

Birds call out to her and she looks up to see birds that she cannot even begin to describe. They are so very different than the birds here on Novus, even their calls are different. And as she walks through a small clearing, she sees a small pool of clear water. It looks inviting and yet, Katniss is hesitant. Something doesn’t seem right about this paradise. Something tells her that this place is a bad omen, that something terrible will come from it. And yet, she cannot find any reason other than that small little inkling that there is anything wrong. Katniss is a smart one and she knows that she needs to trust her gut. Unlike some to sip at the cool water, Katniss backs away and heads back over the bridge. She does not feel safe here.

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Rhone - 06-12-2019

He is stunned by the ivy that blocks his path. It is so tall and lush and completely unnatural. The earth magic that flows through him cannot even touch the ivy and it is as if the ivy is immune to his magic. He tried to part the ivy, to tear it down, to raise it up, but nothing happens. It is strange to him that his magic has no effect on the earthy ivy.

With his magic acting strange, Rhone cannot help but choose to stay along the bridge and watch and wait. Camping has never been something he likes to do, but he feels as though in his instant, it is necessary. He needs to know why his magic isn’t working, why the ivy is keeping him out.

As the days wear on, he notices that the small berries along the ivy are appearing to beat. They emit a sound much like the sound of a beating heart. It is strange and eerie and Rhone is uneasy. The sounds grows louder and louder and louder until Rhone feels as though he is hearing his own heart beating. He cannot hear the sound of the ocean anymore and he wonders if he will go mad with the sound the berries are making

But then one day, the sound simply stops. There’s no more ringing in his ears, no sound of heartbeats, only silence. The silence is eerie and it makes Rhone uncomfortable. He can hear his own thoughts and they make him seem like some sort of individual that should be locked away in a psychiatric ward. He cannot escape the thoughts that plague his mind.

But just as he was prepared to leave the bridge and return home, something strange begins to happen to the ivy. He watches closely as the leaves begin to turn brown and then fall. The berries burst with pearls that scatter at his feet. Petals from flowers unknown shower him as the ivy seems to wither away.

And when the other side of the bridge is shown to him, he cannot help the way his lips gape open. It is beautiful. The birds sing sweet songs and it beckons him onto the island. The trees are tall and lush, the flowers black as night. He is in awe of this place and knows this is where he should retire to. A peaceful island away from the rush and chaos of Novus. He could see himself ending his days here.

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Saphrax - 06-12-2019

Saphrax could really say he was indifferent about the whole volcano and wall and ivy and all that shit that came with it. He could hardly be bothered with the way the berries beat like a beating heart, the way the ivy blocked his flight to the other side of the bridge. When he had been met with the wall of ivy, he simply had returned home, caring nothing for what came of the whole situation.

However, days later he had begun to hear whispers of what others had seen. They said the ivy wall had simply withered away after days of silence. They claimed that a beautiful island was on the other side of the bridge.

Saphrax listened to them, gathered information, and decided that he too would visit the new island. After all, Novus was lacking in girls that found him attractive. He was so used to everyone just falling at his feet and begging for him to fill their wombs with fiery babies. He had gotten no tail in Novus and it was downright disheartening. New island meant new women (or so he thought).

Wings flapped easily in the morning breeze, carrying him over the bridge and towards the new island. At first he flew around the board of the island, then slowly working his way inward. The island was much smaller than he had imagined and to his dismay, there was not a single female anywhere. The only other individuals on this island were the ones that had traveled across on the bridge. But Saphrax tried not to get discouraged. He might find something inland, where he couldn’t fly to.

His landing was nothing short of perfect. Wings folded against his side as he began to steps into the dense jungle in hopes of reaching the center. The whole time he was traveling inland, he kept hoping that the dense jungle would not brush against his wings and pluck away a feather. He had spent way too damn long preening this morning for some jungle filth to mess it up again.

And as he came into the small cleaning, he is disheartened to see that there are no women. His trek into the jungle was fruitless and all it had done was make him thirsty. The clear pool was inviting and Saphrax was quick to sip from the waters. He was expecting cool water to quench his thirst but he was met with sweet liquid that made him thirsty for more. And ever the stupid individual, Saphrax continued to drink, not caring if it was probably not a good idea.

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Sloane - 06-12-2019

The wall of ivy had been the talk of Novus lately. Even secluded on her own private island in Delumine, Sloane had heard rumors of the ivy and what was happening. It was as if the daily news was so focused on that damn wall of plants that nothing else mattered. No cared any longer for the monster in the woods killing people. No one cared about the small little squirrels that lit fires when startled. No. Now everyone only cared about a plant…a fucking plant.

Most of the time, Sloane ignored any sort of rumor or news about the bridge or the ivy. Frankly, she was tired of hearing about it. And yet today, there was quite a lot of chatter about the lack of ivy, which Sloane thought was quite strange considering the ivy was all Novus could talk about for days.

Upon hearing that the ivy had seemingly withered away and the other side of the bridge had been exposed, Sloane made her way off her own tiny island towards the bridge. Perhaps she would see what was on the other side.

She walked with slow, meandering steps, in a hurry to go nowhere. At the sound of a something bouncing along the stone bridge, eyes looked down to see the fallen leaves, petals, and pearls. How strange. She didn’t remember there being pearls or flowers on the ivy. Gathering a few samples for later experimentations, Sloane continued on.

And when she got to the other side, her eyes looked out at the island that had been revealed. It looked ordinary and yet different at the same time. It had white sands, trees, birds. While the actual elements looked different than on a normal island, they were still the same type of items. This island was no different than any other, she surmised. And with that, Sloane turned and headed back to her own island. All that hype over nothing.

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Targwyn - 06-12-2019

She stands on the island now exposed by the fallen ivy. She had heard the rumors, the stories, the fear that everyone seemed to exude regarding the island and the ivy. She couldn’t see how everyone was so bent up out of shape about it, but she supposed there were worst things to be afraid of. But considering that everyone was so startled by the sudden appearance of a strange island at the other side of the bridge, Targwyn had to investigate. After all, she might find a way to help facilitate chaos on Novus.

But as she stands on the island, she cannot help but wonder why people have been so scared. There’s no scary animals, no trails of blood, no talking trees. It looked like an ordinary island. Sure the birds were different, the flowers black as night, and a pool that tasted sweet. Strange, yes, but scary? She didn’t think so.

For hours it seemed that she had explored the island, finding nothing  like what she was hoping to find. But Targwyn would not lose hope. Perhaps if she searched a little harder and a little longer, she might find something that she could use to her advantage. Surely there was something on this island worth her time.

(eek D: Total crap.)

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Caine - 06-13-2019

♠︎ ♣︎ ♥︎ ♦︎

just when I've managed
to harden my heart

I
f Caine had not chosen that morning to venture into town in search of the enigmatic Denoctian florist’s House of Fleurs Exotiques — a pretentious name for the demure little booth it really was — he would’ve been there to see it happen.

Instead, he’d had to settle for hearing about it secondhand.

The wall of ivy had fallen, and as it fell, pearls had rained from the sky.

He later found out, from a secondary source, that pearls had not rained from the sky but had instead burst out of the heart-red berries entangled in the ivy, and Caine couldn’t decide which account was stranger.

It was difficult to keep from departing for the island right then and there to convince himself of either truth.

But as there had been for the past several weeks, there was business to attend to (tonight, it came in the form of exotic flowers and a neatly penned letter) — and so it was not until day slinked into evening, and evening into midnight, that Caine set off to indulge his curiosity for the second time in a matter of days.

- ♢ -

There really were pearls. Here and there they gleamed, lodged in the crevices of the volcanic rock or winking beneath the meandering tide. Not the ankle deep expanse the rumors had sung of — more like the remnants of a lady’s unstrung necklace — but unlike most times, he doubted the rumors were hyperbolic.

Caine had arrived late, and most would agree that these were dark times for the solar courts.

Were the pearls a gift sent by the gods, then, to feed their hungry people? If they were, Caine thought they should have at least chosen something edible. With everyone and their mothers bound to flood the markets with their haul at first light tomorrow, pearls would become almost worthless before noon.

He regarded the picked-over treasure once more, mouth set in a faint frown, before advancing onwards to the end of the waves, and the beginning of the island.

Even a day exposed to the sun and sea had not been enough to wash the red stain of berry juice out of the pearls. They reminded him of bloody teeth.

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Florentine - 06-14-2019

i'm a pretty flower girl
check out my pretty flower curls

A robin watches her as she wanders. Its eyes blink bright as gold - bright as suns framed by their wild planets. In its beak a leaf it holds. It is blue like water and it ripples as puddles may. It drops the leaf and it falls like a droplet to splash between the luscious grasses. The little bird does not dismay and parts its beak to sing a song. Yet the sound that fills this girl’s ears is not like any bird should sing.

Oh the air is filled with organ song, violins and ivory keys. Symphonies ring and the girl stops, for oh, indeed, this is like nothing she has heard before. The winter bird sings of times and planets, of magics waning and spells creating. It makes a metronome in her heart and it is a lub-dub, a lub-dub, an echo of the berries that bloomed in ivy leaves and rose up, up into the highest sky.

She is a daring girl, this Florentine. With curious lips she reaches forward and the bird keeps singing, singing, singing. Not even when hot breath rustles the leaves upon it song-filled chest does it flounder in its masterpiece. But oh those gold eyes glitter as they watch this flower-girl…

RE: ACT III: how reality collapses - Ulric - 06-14-2019

ULRIC
His head throbbed unnaturally, unlike any type of headache he’d had before. This was something more, something greater that couldn’t be explained by any amount of stress, of which he had experienced ample amounts of in the weeks leading up to it. He could feel it in his bones, a gnawing that drew him ever closer back toward the grand doorway once covered in ivy, now barren and surrounded by more bodies than even called Delumine home.

It was open.

The Warden’s heart thrummed with excitement and his eyes sparked with a tinge of fear, but his curiosity was greater than the latter, and bravely (or stupidly) he pushed onward, shouldering past those too cautious to pass through so quickly.
