light matrix - Indrani - 03-20-2020

The surface was just over her head.

Sunlight filtered through the water, showering her with glittering light as she drifted quietly upon the calm of the current, embraced by the warmth and feeling the first bite of feeling unsure of the next stage that she was determined to make, but worried by. The waves were welcoming, her home and had been for her whole life and their world was alien.

The siren found herself buffeted by waves, watching a shoal of fish that shone like polished silver as they darted frantically away from her, harried along by a small pod of predators. They left Indrani alone, for she was large then they were.

Her curiosity finally won, and with a small surge of her tail, she pushed upwards and broke the surface tension, nostrils flaring wide as her gills clamped shut and lungs filled with air.

How strange it felt! Indrani had only felt it once before, when she had stolen the shaman’s concoction and made it away safely, only to drink it all and proceed to a safe place to test those limbs. They had felt weird, and even now in the shallows, Indrani refrains.

She would soon. She knew her sister was here, somewhere and she couldn’t wait to see her, oblivious to the tension between many of them.

So here she remains, in the shallows, propped up on her tail as she observes those walking on the shore. Perhaps if she watched enough, she might learn how to walk as they did. She could see some who were moving faster, and Indrani entertained the thought of being able to dance upon the shore one day, upon four limbs and not falling face-first into the brine.

Her eyes were bright, and she was ready… and yet, she hesitates.

She had been feeling lively these days. She wasn't sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing. It was nice in the moment, to have the energy to stroll wherever she pleased, the usual storm in her head subsiding to a dull ache. However, these brief periods of respite were often followed by days and days of laying immobile, too ill to move or eat.  She enjoyed it while she still could though. Picoro had spent the morning combing her hair. He had pulled the strands into a braid, taking extra care to arrange the pieces to hide the places that were thinnest.  It was still a small thin braid, but she liked it better than the usual nonetheless.  Unfortunately, there wasn't much that could be done with her tail.

Not long ago she had visited the Terminus sea and had grown rather fond of the crashing waves below, though she hadn't summoned the courage to approach the edge of the cliffs.  That morning she had set out to cross the steppe again, hoping to get another taste of the salty ocean air.  She smiled softly as the smell hit her, and she finally saw the peaks of waves over the rocks.

She picked her way forwards carefully. She wasn't graceful, she when she walked her hooves nearly dragged across the ground. Here she was careful to lift them high. She was better at navigating it this time around, then she had been before. she stumbled less and dared to approach the edge. She still stopped about a foot away. instead, she craned her neck forward to see down below. She was surprised to see that there was a shore, and not just a straight drop. Other horses promenaded below, and she longed to join them, but she dare not attempt to make her way down the narrow craggy path.

Something caught her attention in the water right in the midst of the eddies, stood, or lay - she couldn't tell which- a blue and crimson mare. The glow of her points reminded her of a winged mare back in Elysium. She was struck with curiosity, and her heart was tugged even further still to make her way down to the water. She glaced warily at the trail down the cliffs. Picoro, knowing what she was thinking hissed at her in warning. "Do you really think thats a good idea?" he cautioned, looking at her with concern.

Slowly she made her way towards it.  She slid down the first little bit, rocks skidding out from under her hooves. She pressed herself against the cliff wall, her heart suddenly hammering. She could feel the rocks bumping off her ribs as she moved.  She made it to the bottom and hung her head, catching her breath. Once her heart slowed, she made her way to the water, dipping her hooves in. She could feel the strong undertow of the waves pulling against her fetlocks.  She moved along the shore towards the mare she had seen. "Hello" she greeted "aren't you cold?" The waters were still frigid after the winter, and she wondered how the mare wasn't absolutely shaking.

RE: light matrix - Indrani - 03-22-2020

The voice caught her off guard, somewhat, when it came from the stranger before her. To her eyes, she was different to everything she’d seen of those who walked the land. She did not have a sheen of light upon her coat, and there was something skeletal about her - but maybe this was the way of some of them. Indrani’s head twisted slightly in place, water rippling around her neck as droplets ran down her fin in rivulets.

The question was peculiar. How could she be cold? The thought was alien to her, and so it was here that the kelpie gave a flex of her tail until her fins breached the surface, her tail cutting through the tension like a knife as she twisted it to the side. Hidden just beneath in the shallows, where hind legs might have been, her powerful pelvic fins flared out as they supported her as the ocean’s current dragged under her.

“Why would I be cold? The water is as lovely as ever!” She speaks, her voice soothing and high, an innocence to it that was everything she was. Indrani remained there, until she looked again at the stranger.

Her eyes saw the animal with her, clinging to her and looking like it was hanging. Her ears pricked upright, and she rose a little from the water - still not ready to her go of her fins, but curiosity was winning over her fear.

“What is that with you?” she asks in a bright voice. There was no harm to her question, she’d never seen animals of the land and only those with fins, scales and rubbery skin, each a predator of another beneath the waves - nothing existed down there like either of them.

Indrani was transfixed.

Luvena

Her eyes widened only slightly as she saw the mares fins rise above the surface. So thin and razor-like that the waves didn't break against them, instead of carrying straight through. She had seen horses like this before, there were some that stayed around the edges of Elysium. She had never spoken to them, but on occasion, she had seen the end of a tail breach the surface.  She imagined that was why the mare wasn't absolutely frozen in spring seas. She wondered if this one had a tail. The surface was too chaotic to see beneath it.  "perhaps to you" she replied with a slight laugh. "But I think most would disagree

Picoro, who had been silent up until now blinked in annoyance at the mare's question. "Has no one in Novus ever seen a sloth?" He asked indignantly. Luvena looked back at him for a moment before turning back to the water horse. "He's a sloth" she answered "They're slow tree climbers, though Picoro prefers my back to the trees. I had never heard of them until I met him as a baby" this comment was mostly directed at the animal in question, who let out a slight whine in response.

There was something different about this mare, aside from the obvious. She didn't look at her the same way most did. She still looked at her as if she was strange... but there was no pity behind her gaze, no concern or horror or disgust. It was nice, she hadn't had anyone look at her that way in a very long time.

"I'm Luvena, by the way" she introduced herself. "I take it you're new here? Welcome" A warm smile crossed her delicate face.

Was she new?

She wasn’t, really. Maybe up here, on the surface, it was new. It was different, that was for sure. It was interesting, hearing the words spoken by the creature riding with her, and Indrani cannot help but give a wide grin at the words.

“There is nothing like you, like him, below the surface! He is - you, Picoro, are a wonder of the surface!” she speaks with brilliant, verdant manner that she knew was unbefitting of her, but Indrani was on the surface, away from all the rules and regulations that she had learned to abide and follow below. She knew how to bend them, but up here… was was different?

Indrani smiles.

“I am Indrani,” she says in a singsong voice, and she gives that same bright smile. “Here I am not new, but on the surface… perhaps I am new, all over again,” she says with laughter that rolls from her tongue so gently.

The lass flexed her tail, the fins and long length breaking the surface as Indrani grinned.

“Watch me now!” She speaks, and with that grin she drew upon the core inside her that had changed, magic altering her very being, and she changed. From the surf she rose, tail and sail melting to hair, caudal fins lengthening and building muscle until she stands, albeit shakily, upon four limbs.

Not her first, but it was still new to her.

Her waterborne features gone, Indrani cannot help but dance forward. She moves strangely, limbs locking and each hoof placed delicately into the water, as she moves clear of the water. Her tail flags, her crystalline horns reflect the light, as Indrani moves with a strange but elegant step.

“I am new now! New all over. Have you lived upon this land, all your life?” She asks, ever curious and eager to hear the tale of others...
