She had been in this place called Novus for some time now, following along with her caravan as they performed at strange little settlements and within the walled cities of the various courts. Her companions would linger yet - Novus was too far away for a brief excursion only - but she had departed from them, drifting into this place called dawn, her time of the day, she knew in her heart, and claiming herself to be one of its residents. She was not yet important to anyone here, but she would be, soon, she was certain. And so, she stepped into the court, the center of its doings, it seemed, where the equines of this place gathered and she stood right in the middle of it.

…What else was she going to do?

She pawed at the ground and looked about at the different people passing by, stallions and mares and fillies and colts,  some pretty, others not so much, but no one truly caught her eye. No one seemed to notice her. Not yet. Truly, all the times she had ventured out it was with a companion in mind, and here she was, alone, not familiar enough with this place to really know what she ought to be doing for fun. She sighed, and puffed out her chest - Mesnyi would not be discouraged yet, for all her beauty and fortitude.

"You see, women are like fires, like flames. Some women are like candles, bright and friendly. Some are like single sparks, or embers, like fireflies for chasing on summer nights. Some are like campfires, all light and heat for a night and willing to be left after. Some women are like hearthfires, not much to look at but underneath they are all warm red coal that burns a long, long while."

the sun will rise with my name on your lips

The Dawn Court is full of potential allies, yet Basil cannot help but shiver with nerves. Truth be told, it is the first time on their own outside of the familiarities of home— and the first time they've spent any length of time without their playmate only two inches behind them. It is.. unsettling. For all that they urged change and reformation within the Day Court, they were frankly discomfited by change in environment and routine. Nervously, they adjust the gilded leaves atop their poll and fidget with the a gold pin they only vaguely thought might be slipping out of place.

In truth, they settle more easily into the chatter of the Dawn Court and their variety of builds than they do at home— gone are the laborious descriptions of battle, the squall of all manner of people testing their hooves against one another, the sneer as other, taller horses looked down upon them for their unassuming physique. And yet, they know no one; should they just show up near the nobles' meeting places and assume themselves welcome? Go to a tavern and chat people up?

Basil sighs to themself and pauses in the street; if their playmate were here, he'd have some pragmatic suggestion that would make Basil feel both inspired and idiotic for not thinking of it themself. Instead, they frowned and glanced hopefully around the square. Another outcast stood out — pale as morning mist and twice and effeminate — and they hesitantly sidled up to the mare. "Excuse me?" they asked politely, speaking slowly so that they could enunciate through their unmistakable accent. "Would you be able to point me to.." Their shoulders sagged just a little and, after fumbling a moment, Basil tried again, "Wherever, ehm, the House Heads meet here?"

Were there such things as 'Heads of Households' in the Dawn Court? Were they just on a wild alicorn chase?

cause everything will change tonight

Stay Determined.
Even in the wake of destruction, new faces slowly trickled into Delumine. Somnus had seen it happen with his own two eyes, time and time again. In this place he called home and, the last, as well as the one before that. It was inevitable, he surmised, for one form of destruction to slowly bring in new life, cultivated by a tenderness only known by a mother.

It was the way of the world, after all. When one thing ended, another began. That was simply how it was. Life, death. Death, life. Dusk, Dawn. Night, Day.

Even now, Somnus could still smell smoke in the air, despite the anomalous transition from winter to spring. Another year had passed, and he had grown another year older, but much around him remained the same. Much, however, was also different.

The Dawn King surveyed the court with passive, tired eyes as he departed from the stone hallways of the citadel and into the courtyard. They were rebuilding, but it would be a long, long time until their home was where it once had been. The acres upon acres of forest and land lost to the fury of the wildfires would take years to regrow, but Somnus was a patient man. The lands would survive and take back what had been lost, even though it may take years.

The lands, however, weren’t the only things that had changed. While the coldest of the seasons had passed, the dunalino still found himself fretting over Regis. His petite son was growing, yes, but the wildfires and smoke inhalation had dampened his already unsound health, and Somnus was oftentimes grave with worry for his only son. Anemone was slowly growing into a beautiful young filly, and unlike her brother, she was strong and hearty, ready to take on the world around them with vigor only the young could possess.

As he surveyed his surroundings, there was a loud trill! through the air as Alba spun around overhead a collection of court members, the barn owl spotting her bond-mate and altering her path in the air to return to him. Wings splayed, Alba landed upon Somnus’ golden rump with practiced ease, immediately popping her beak at him as though incredibly pleased with herself. The action drew a smile to his lips.

“Yes, yes. You’ve done quite well for yourself today, hm?” The words were spoken softly, endearingly, and the satisfaction that his companion felt filtered eagerly through their soul-bond.

Leaving the citadel behind in favor of stretching his legs and speaking to the people of the Dawn Court, it didn’t take long for Somnus to encounter those new faces. A dusky, tawny colored individual with striking blue eyes, and a finely-built, pale maiden were gathered near one another. He did not recognize either one of them, but still, the stallion’s dark lips twisted upwards into a welcoming smile, tired verdant eyes perking up in genuine intrigue as he approached them.

“Greetings,” he beckoned as he drew closer, dipping his obsidian crown to the earthly colored individual and then to the silver-lavender maid, “My apologies. I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure to formally get to know each other. I’m Somnus, and this is Alba. Might I inquire your names?”

I hope no one minds a big ol' nerd showing up? :3

She was on the lookout for a searching gaze, an attentive stare, and so when the stranger started toward Mesnyi, she made to look unaware until the moment they started speaking. She didn’t know enough to entirely recognize the accent, but she’d heard it before, here, and the start-and-stop question was enough to make her think they might be worthwhile. Mesnyi looked to the reddish stranger, lightly built with curling ears and a soft face, a golden crown of leaves atop their head. She smiled, large blue eyes looking thoughtfully at them. ”Hmm…No.” She paused. ”I may be more of a stranger here than yourself,” she did not say “outsider,” no, for Mesnyi would always find a place, for as little or long as she needed it.

It was then that the golden pegasus approached, single-horned and sun-catching. He was of noble bearing she thought, (and had the faintest suspicions that this first one was of good blood themself), and she eyed the proud owl atop his rump. It reminded her a bit of the reddish stranger.

She liked the way he talked. Mesnyi smiled prettily again, not too wide, not too tight. She glanced to the individual next to her invitingly, before looking back to Somnus. ”It’s lovely to meet you Somnus,” she tipped her head to look the owl in the face,”And you as well, Alba. I am Mesnyi.” She itched to ask of this stallion’s status, but waited for Basileios to introduce themself.
