strangeness and
charm
The island had returned.

As soon as Corrdelia heard the news, she could not believe it. The land had been swallowed by the sea a season ago and never been seen again, until now. The rumors claimed it came right back, but in a different form. This piqued her interest immediately, although of course Hāsta was not too thrilled by the idea. As always, she reluctantly joined her companion on their adventure to explore the new land.

They took flight at dawn, the winter chill setting in. All the trees had shed their leaves by now and the air tastes like frost. The first snow of the season has not yet fallen, but it would likely be any day now. Corr is one to appreciate all the seasons for different reasons and looks forward to making horse angels as soon as the snow arrives. For now, she reckons this new and improved island will be worth her time. Perhaps she can even find new ingredients for her teas; the possibilities could be endless with such deep rooted magic present.

The mare and her crow fly high above the ocean, keeping a careful eye for any of the sea monsters that had been present last. To their surprise, there are none and even the bridge does not seem as menacing as the one made of lava before. Such strange magic indeed.

When they land on the shore, their hooves expected sand, but it's actually snow. Freshly fallen snow from the smell of it and Corr takes a big mouthful in front of her. Hāsta, who has also landed on the ground, stares at her looking very unimpressed. She is used to the witch's wild antics by now, but it doesn't mean she approves of them.

"What? It tastes good! You should try it," she suggests to the bird, a childlike grin on her face. Hāsta's deadpan expression does not change and she merely shakes her head. "No thanks."

An idea sparks in the dappled mare's mind and she looks around mischievously. She trots to a larger pile of snow and uses her telekinesis and help from her nose to form a small snowball. With Hāsta not paying attention, Corr lifts it up and aims at the bird, successfully hitting her on the side. The snowball falls apart and the impact throws her companion off balance. She squawks loudly and jumps to face Corr, her feathers all ruffled from irritation. Meanwhile, the mare is laughing so hard, she can barely breathe.

"You.. you should've seen your face!" she manages to say in between laughs, pointing the tip of her wing to the crow. Hāsta makes a disapproving sound and flies off into the trees. There isn't much cover, although the pine trees are much taller and there is snow covering all the tree branches.

"Oh, come back! I'm just playing around!" she calls out, but loses sight of the bird. She makes a hrrmph sound and starts to head in the general direction of where she flew off to. At the least, she won't be bothered heading deeper into the island. The scenery is remarkable- entirely blanketed in white fluffy snow and scattered with forests of pine and birch trees. It's very different from the island she remembers, but full of that same wonder she felt when she was here before. It makes her feel like a young foal heading out into the world for the first time. It's truly amazing.

Charlie stood on the shore where the bridge touched mainland Novus and stretched out into the sea. It’s not the first time she’s stood here, at this most mystical and strangest of crossroads. But now she is older, and above her Indy flies wide and low circles like a last fall leaf in the wind. The young girl stretches her wings to the breeze and lifts her vermillion eyes to the distant horizon where she can just see the island.

Where it has risen from the sea.

And she knows that she must go to it, for the way her heart begs her to go to all new things. She is an explorer, and adventurer, and she cannot resist the pull like a siren’s call. Charlie stretches her wings to the sky and the corner of her lips turns up in the barest of sly smiles. Now that she can fly, there is nowhere that she cannot go (without a break or two, perhaps, as her stamina is still not the best).

Charlie rises to meet her bonded, who drifts alongside her. Their shapes dash over the frigid sea like broken reflections, rising over the crest of every wave. “Islands don’t just disappear into the sea and then change their minds one day,” the osprey says, yellow eyes bright and sharp, skeptical. The filly laughs, “This one does.”

“Yeah, well… just be careful. You remember the things we encountered last time?” She does, of course. It’s hard to forget a place like that, with birds that don’t quite look like birds and water that creates weird mist with figures in it. “Everything will be fine, Indy,” Charlie reassures her bonded, glancing at the bird as the island comes upon them like an old friend. Only, it looks nothing like she remembers.

The filly lands on what used to be a beach, but is now covered in dry winter grasses. Her landings have gotten a lot better with Commander Marisol’s help, and she barely trips over her own hooves as she immediately races along the shore. Huge evergreen trees rise up out of the island, with branches dusted in a fine coating of snow. And snow is piled everywhere, as if this place is deep in winter and not that the season has only just started.

“Can you believe this?” Charlie asks, eyes wide with wonder as she begins to trot deeper into the forest. The dry grasses brush up against her ankles and the sound it makes it like a strange whispering. Indy alights upon the girl’s shoulders, “It’s like it’s not even the same island anymore,” responds the osprey.

From the corner of her eye, the filly thinks she sees movement in the trees. Charlie turns her head, “Did you see that?” and begins to move quickly in the direction of it. She can hear the birds in the trees, singing magical and unfamiliar songs. Was it just a bird? Or something else? As the pair rounds the trunk of a tree, they see not a strange creature but rather a familiar face.

“Oh, hello Corrdelia,” she says, slowing her gait as she approaches the older mare. Admittedly, the girl is a little disappointed it’s only another equine and not some rare animal, but there is a whole island to explore at least. Charlie notices that the medic doesn’t seem to have her bonded nearby, and Indy looks on from her perch with keen eyes. “Where’s your crow?”

strangeness and
charm
There is a voice behind her and she turns to see Charlie, with her osprey, Indy, taking perch nearby. Corr's expression immediately brightens up at the sight of the girl and she jumps up and down. She hasn't seen her since the strange event in Denocte's woods where the fog swallowed them both up. She had been worried that the girl was hurt somehow, so it's a huge relief to see her and Indy in one piece now.

"Oh thank heavens!" she exclaims, wrapping her wings around Charlie in a quick hug. "I'm so happy to see you. I thought something happened back in the woods! Were you just transported back outside of it too? Or did you find the spirit after all?" Corr hadn't heard anything from the events in the woods, so part of her has been curious for many weeks. It'll be interesting to hear if Charlie had seen anything more, but even if she hadn't, she's alright and that's what matters.

She then realizes the girl had asked a question a moment ago. She looks around again for Hāsta but the crow is still out of sight. "Ah, yes," she says with a sigh. "I tried to have a playful snowball fight and Hāsta wasn't impressed, so she took off. Would you mind helping me look for her?" Her eyes are wide and hopeful.

Corr tries to reach out through their bond and she can still feel the crow near, but she is not saying a word through their telepathy. It makes her slightly concerned that the bird is either very offended or in some kind of trouble. Surely she'd say something if it's the latter? Then again, this is Hāsta after all.

Taking another few steps into the woods, the mare continues to be amazed by the scenery of this new island. "Novus sure isn't short on surprises and magic," she says to Charlie while breathing in the frosty smell of winter. "It's truly breathtaking." If she didn't love her swamp house so much, she might consider living here. Although given the island's history, it could very well turn into a disaster. Maybe for now it's here to give them some moments of reflection and peace before it possibly disappears again into the sea. She will take it all in for now and enjoy it while it lasts.

When the pegasus mare wraps Charlie up in an excited embrace upon seeing the filly, she scrunches up her nose at the strange and unfamiliar contact. She gives Corrdelia a moment but then wriggles out from beneath her wings, hair and feathers mussed, and takes a step back. “I’m fine, nothing bad happened,” she says, though there is a measure of disappointment in her voice. Nothing exciting happened either.

“When the mist came, Indy and I were somehow put back outside the forest,” the young girl shrugs a little, as if she’s already put the experience behind her. No ghost, no spirit, no fun, “That’s all that happened.” To say that Charlie doesn’t wish something else had happened would be a lie, but there are always more adventure for her to go on when one doesn’t exactly pan out.

She glances about as Corrdelia explains why her bonded is not nearby—trying to spot her admist the snow covered trees—but it’s hard to tell what is the slick dark feathers of a crow or the deep shadows beneath a snow laden branch. A snowball fight is what chased away the bird? Corrdelia and her bonded sure are different. Charlie glances back at Indy where she is perched upon her shoulders and can’t imagine them being so different from each other.

Indy might worry herself a little over the young girl’s safety, but they have very similar spirits: strong-willed, free and fun-loving. Her bonded likes to view herself as the older sister of the pair, but sisters they certainly are. “Sure, Corrdelia, we’ll help you look,” Charlie says. “Indy, do you want to see if you can spot her from the air?”

The Osprey, fortunately, has sharp eyesight. She appears to almost shake her head a bit before taking off from her bondmate’s shoulders and rising up into the canopy above them. “Which way did she go?” the girl asks, wondering which direction they should start looking in. The island is big, and the crow could truthfully be anywhere.

So far, this time at least, there doesn’t seem to be any strange beasts on it.

“I guess so,” she glances around with bright vermillion eyes, but honestly it doesn’t look that different than any place deep in the grip of winter. Lots of bright, blinding, sparkling snow and quiet. “Don’t you think it’s weird that it just disappeared into the ocean and then decided to come back?” The idea of the island is strange and cool, sure, but something about it isn’t quite right either, “It’s almost like it can think for itself or something.” Not that she intends to ever stop exploring it.

strangeness and
charm
It comes as a slight shock to learn that Charlie faced the same outcome as Corr did back in that forest. She finds it odd that they hadn't seen each other when they were thrown out, but it had all been strange magic really. It was nothing that Corr had even seen before and maybe they'll never be able to understand it. What matters now though is that they're all okay, but especially Charlie and Indy.

Thankfully, the pair agree to help Corr look for Hāsta and Charlie sends Indy to scout from above. "This way," Corr instructs as they walk through the woods, gesturing to the path ahead. Unfortunately it all looks the same and she's not exactly sure of the specific direction. Maybe the osprey will have a better look from higher up.

Charlie comments on the island's behavior, how it disappeared and came back and how it may have a mind of its own. Perhaps it did and it's more than just magic. She knows a lot more about Tempus now and it's still possible that he could be connected. Maybe it's all connected?

"You're right, it is weird. It very well could be alive in its own way," she replies, reaching out with her magic to see if she can sense anything like she can with others' emotions, but she comes up empty. "I've heard rumors that the ground swallowed up a foal once. Watch your step!" She looks over at Charlie smiling. While she's really joking, she did actually hear a rumor like that. It was about the island's first form, but who knows if it really happened or if the place is still dangerous. So far, she hadn't seen anything that seemed risky.

There is a faint cawing noise in the distance. It sounds a lot like Hāsta, but Corr still hasn't gotten a reply from the bird through their telepathy. When she looks up at the canopy, she still sees no clear visual of her bonded. As usual, the crow has to make things complicated.
