If a woman is in one’s thoughts all day, one should not have to dream of her at night.

The only thing Dune loves more than a day off is… well, anything that’s free. But especially booze.

That morning he eagerly shouldered his way through crowds of children in search of the best (free!) shells and (free!!) sea glass. (It was not clear if he was oblivious to the age gap between himself and the average shell hunter, or if he just didn’t care.) And as evening fell he hovered, quite brashly, near the open bar until the bartender finally began to make drinks. All of it in blissful silence and solitude, broken by only the occasional longing glance towards happy families and laughing lovers.

Suffice to say Dune is deep, deep in his cups as the night thickens. He stumbles around, restless, too buzzed to pay attention to the storytellers gathered round the flames. The dexterity required to make jewelry has long since taken flight; he doesn’t look twice at the groups hunched over their creations. He just passes with a scoff to himself- “tweens”- and a soft chuckle.

He doesn’t know exactly what happens next, or how. One moment he’s slipping between the craft tables and the bonfires, the next he’s standing, bleary-eyed, before a tall, magnificent, daybreak masterpiece of a woman. He blurts out the first thing that comes to mind. “Please take this from me,” he says louder than necessary, offering the pegasus the rest of his drink. His ears flick back as he hears how loud his own voice is, and he overcompensates with the next sentence, which comes out in an ominous whisper:  “Itsa public service.

and at last i see the light, and it's like the fog has lifted
Solstice ventured out, further than she’d ever gone before.  She left the comforts of home behind her, looking back only once with a look of worry, before mustering her courage to go.  You needn’t worry so much…  Luna chides her with a quiet purr, kneeding her withers in comfort before settling comfortably against her mane, yawning as she reassures the girl for what seemed like the thousandth time.  For although Solstice had been coming into her own for some time, there were still fleeting moments where she was still the lost and afraid child who had run from the temple grounds.  She still had moments where she woke in a cold sweat, unsure if they would find her. Relax… it’s just a party…  the cat’s voice reassures her once more, and Solstice nods in response, moving southward with purpose as she found her way to the beach.

She knew Luna was right, but it didn’t make the outside world less scary.  Still, as she wandered along the seashore with wonder in her eyes, Solstice knew she was right to come.  She’d never seen the ocean before, stretching wide and blue as far as she could see.  Children laughed and built marvelous sand creations, each vying to make his the tallest or the grandest.  Others combed the beach for treasures (and joining in the fun, Solstice even picked up a couple of beautiful shells, marveling at the way they sparkled and threw light from their abalone surfaces).  She bent to allow a small girl to twist bits of sea glass into her mane, smiling as they sparkled in the sunshine, murmuring her thanks as she continued on.

In her wake, two owl finches darted and dived in the sea breeze.  They would land on her from time to time, before flying off to gather bits of seaweed or small crabs from the tidepools, chittering with beautiful songs as they went.  “Briar… Dahlia…”  She called to them as they gathered near her once more, settling upon her neck and bickering with each other as the cat upon Solstice shoulders merely rolled her eyes and curled back into herself to sleep.

Day turned to night, and sunlight faded to firelight as she stood among strangers and enjoyed the show of dancers and musicians alike.  There was a wonder to everything, and her wide golden eyes tried to take everything in.  She felt more alive now, bolder than she had before, even allowing a smile to flicker at her lips as she danced and swayed to the music.  And as she jostles into a stranger, Solstice gasps slightly, an apology on her lips even as he thrusts a drink toward her and slurs a greeting.  She isn’t sure how to respond, quickly grabbing at the drink to avoid it from spilling, even as Luna whispers a chuckled warning in her mind.  Be careful with that one… he’s a smooth talker…  But she doesn’t know what to make of the warning, too naïve to understand the implications.

“I… Thank you?”  She blinks at him, wondering what to make of his strangeness, not understanding that his actions were made bolder by the drinks.  “Are you enjoying yourself?”
