Kinder und sterne küssen und verlieren sich

Its first experience being alive was not what most unprocessed changelings like Nizizi incurred.  Within moments of Its rather sensational arrival (like a shooting star; falling in a fiery arc through the sky, only to make like a meteorite and smash into the earth) - attacked, by something bearlike, rousted from Its crater where it rest.  Leapt upon, made to feel like a meal in mere seconds, no time to rest, no time to adjust|unadjust, no time to understand.

Are we dead or are we alive? Instinct wondered.  The Ego waned in response, empty, unstructured.

Indeterminate.

The bear, the thing, with its savage claws and its crushing mouth of teeth, so big with its gravity held Nizizi down,

did not want wait.
Would not wait.

Like the Sun pressing into one singular, small star.

The thing's hulking might and terror-inducing noises, snapped at Nizizi's body but Nizizi was made to understand that Its neck was long, flexible, and so was the rest of It.  The Changeling was made of something other than hydrogen and helium.  It could not force a heat so great that it could burn the thing off.  It could not induce the effects of helium so that the thing would die from an imploded center|heart.

The sound It made when the gorgon of a beast struck Nizizi across Its cheek was nothing like the serene, sibilating songs from space.  It scared Itself and writhed until Its body was free, courtesy of wings which swung up and across, uprooting the thing purely by surprise.  Sudden pressure alleviated, as if an Eclipse stole the star's oppressor, the sun,  from existence entirely.

Get up! Instinct urged.

It rolled and rose, the pain on Its face furious, frightful, and blindingly white like a moon. Nizizi could see the large dark figure roll over and rise much the same way It had and it sprang sidewards away from another fist full of claws which snapped out after It.  The Changeling hissed (unlike a snake and more like a cat) and narrowed Its vantablack vision on the offender.  There was no running away just as there was no way of winning.  A swinging tail on Nizizi's back was quick to puncture the soft squishy midsection of the bear thing causing some kind of guttural groan. Its tines were sharp, made more for swimming and digging more than stabbing.  When the thing failed to fall or flee, Nizizi bared Its many-many sharp teeth and charged having nothing else but Its very real body to rely upon.

Was I born to die?

The very first blushing of a young, fearful Ego.
A young and stupidly brave one.
So naïve,

The thing opened its arms wide,
-like the horizon, and
-so unnecessary.

It was like a hug from a bear trap, Nizizi screamed when the thing's claws tore through her wings like razors shredding silk.   The screaming turned into muffled feral growls when It sought purchase to bite skin, skin that it was being crushed against.  It bit hard, and would not stop until It was free from this mortal prison wrapped around it.  Nizizi, the Great Destroyer, known only in Its own galaxy, was overthrown by things that should have never been.

Anger was quicksilver in Its veins.  Adrenaline like light which made Its blood burn brighter and brighter, until the anger became rage.  Until the rage became utter chaos.  Until Nizizi could not stand the pressure of Its own death looming overhead like a martian dust storm. Its wings, though shredded, was outfitted with hooking claws of Its own.  Two in the back was all It used to once again throw off the hulking might of a predator.  Nizizi chose then, to run towards the safety and glow of the moon.

It ran straight into the Sea striping the sand with Its beautiful and very brightly colored blood. It ran so hard that it hit the velocity of a rolling wave and sank to Its knees in exhaustive relief.  The water, so unlike|similar to home, soothed Its frantic and fitful heart and soul.  The bear thing was not dead, just hungry.  And there it paced, fifty yards out in the sand.  Bleeding, limping, moaning about its escaped quarry, about its empty belly.  Hopeful, just like Nizizi, that it would get what it want.  Unfortunately for the thing, what they wanted was not in any way, shape, or form the same.

Eshek is watching from the ocean grass. She's nothing more than another star fallen into the sand-- cold dead and unappealing to beasts that crave blood and flesh. The grass sways around her, alive with the soft roar of the ocean wind. Below that there is the hum of flies and the groan of ants drowning in piles of sand. Deeper yet there is the scrape of crabs against roots that sink lower and lower. Root that are  eager to trap anything foolish enough to descend into the belly of the beach where they rule.

There is life, death and decay below her and still she watches still as stone as the predator and the comet battle for the right to live.

She wonders if either understands that they only need to look at her to know the answer to all that they are leaving unasked.

The bear and the bit of space thrash and moan and each drinks of the other's blood. She watches wounds open up on their skin like graves. She counts the threads of muscle peaking through like fate counting the threads into which she's preparing to cut. She counts the waves crashing into the shore who eat of the sand like snakes eating rodents.

Strike after strike of teeth and claw she counts. Until the bit of space dives into the surf like a stone.

Eshek moves then from her altar of weed and sand. Each step is a whisper of wind that has not yet reached the sea. The bear is flowing over the sand like a mournful planet and she can taste his hunger like brine against her tongue. He turns his head, black and hungry, and she smiles at him because she is blacker and hungrier than he.

He moans and she doesn't think it call it a roar, not with the sea screaming in her ears. He moves and she doesn't think to call it an attack, there is nothing in her for him but death. He strikes with claws and teeth and she doesn't think to call it pain, for it feels like freedom is carving a way out through her flesh.

Light pours from the holes the bear makes in her skin and from it violence rises like a swell of salt-water.

Eshek becomes unhinged.

The bear turns to gore beneath her hooves with words of bones poking out between the pages of red ink. Bits of fur scrape at her tongue when she licks at the back of her teeth. She's not hungry anymore and her own light feels like it's searing against her cold skin.

She moves towards the sea and the water washes away the bits of blood clinging to her legs. The blood that is shining dissolves into the ocean like salt. It carries itself away into the deep. “Come out from the waves.” When she tosses her head threads of fur fall like rain from her lips.

That too is lost to the sea.

The sea is safe.  The sea will be home.

It feels like It is whole again.

Cold.

Compressed.

Calm.

It can taste the sodium chloride in the air,

    --in the sand,

    --in the sea,

    --in the blood.

Not just the changeling's blood, but the thing's blood.

Not just the thing's blood,

the thing's blood.

It recognizes that Outsider flavor, similar to It but also different.

Larger,

Stronger,

hungrier

Eshek is a giantess in relation to Nizizi, and the bear a clumsy and plausible foe with how easy it torn down like it was nothing.  The changeling understands what such savage aggression can do, but It does not know it to be much different than a hunt.

Stars, Nizizi knows, are the best hunters in their own galaxies.  Stars know no Heaven or Hell, they only know Hunger.  They have been known to vaporize Gods and rewrite histories.  Nizizi is so young, so small, so hungry.

Come out from the waves.  She is a magnet reaching forward with the invisible force of her words.  And Nizizi, a filing of iron in the direct path.  Nizizi is nothing in this space -here- not yet, the outsider is but a few minutes alive for the first time.

Bigger stars always eat smaller ones, does Eshek's gravity intend to draw Nizizi in so it may devour It?  The changeling bobs in the waves, lost at sea until she is commanded forward by the First One. Its hair looks like moonblood in the black water, glowing luminous white and so very-very starry bright, it ripples and weaves forward, driven towards the shore -- and the body follows.

Even the tides obey the First One.

Nizizi's dark eyes reflect all of Its sister stars as they study the dark creature waiting for It.

This body,
--this corporeal and damaged thing,
rolls forward out of the last wave to touch It,

It spills out onto the sand like hot titanium being poured out in the form of a small horse. It is not afraid of Eshek, It merely understands that, like the bear, It too must succumb to a larger force. It leans, waiting for all that is the First One, to undo what incarnation of Nizizi has come to be in Novus.  It wanes forward, legs carrying the conscious platform closer, closer,

until It can smell ozone on Eshek's breath.  Oh, what moons has she been savoring as a feast?  Secretly, Nizizi breathes in deep and tries to decide what secrets a dead universe might smell like in Eshek's hair. And then,

It can feel the solidness of Eshek --

Nizizi clicks in confusion and steps back, blinking, the horrible deflated tent of wings flaps pitifully in the wind, all those loose pieces of skin screaming to be mended.  The outsider takes inventory of Its reality, eyes flitting back towards the bear slurry -- back to the First One -- then back again.

What are you?
What am I?
What are we?

        Are we?  Me?
        Are we -- you?

It can in no way describe what It is thinking, all It can do is lean forward again to lick the blood off of Eshek's knee, not because It cares, but because It is hungry.

She understands the way of the stars because she has been the black gravity holding them trapped in nothingness. If they are small specks of brightness in a void, she is the void in which all the light in the world is trapped. But then is she also not light? Is she not both the shining brightness and the void?

Of course she understands the way the girl moves like a star. She understands because she has been everything.

Eshek watches the waves move around the little star. The tide pushes them closer, and closer, and closer. She does not wonder if it feels a little like falling because she already knows. There is nothing in her that wants to fight the sea. Everything at the bottom of all that salt and brine is dead already, shells and ships, pale coral and fragile fish bones. It's all dead.

But what she cannot comprehend is the way this creature doesn't understand. It's eyes shine bright with confusion, like milk too thin to give life. It clicks like a bird with crooked wings and a broken beak. It moves towards her on thin legs that are not as bent as they should be. It is broken.

She knows it it broken.

And so when it licks at the blood on her knees, Eshek does what all universes do to broken things. Her lips pull back to reveal the last of the bear fur stuck in her gums like splinters. Each of her teeth shine like pearls caught in flesh instead of sand and sea. She lays them across its poll and she bites.

Eshek bites hard.

She tries to push it towards the water.

And when she pulls back it is only enough to growl in a way no bear could ever speak. She growls and it sounds like a universe crashing down and cracking open. Her roar is the sound of a hundred stars falling to a mountain where gods pretend to rule.

Bow. Her roar says, bow and I will not eviscerate you.

Eshek feels like she's just waking up. She's shaking loose all the grave-dirt that buried her violence for so long. She's leaving all the lotus-faces of her dead city and all her endless blackness in which she was the only real light.

She loves the feeling of being awake. All the light in her feels like fire, like the core of everything is dancing hot and bright inside her stomach.

Kinder und sterne küssen und verlieren sich

Worlds collide.

Nizizi does not bow - It collapses to Its knees in the shallows of the water and inhales the salt off the air as waves mist off Its gaunt, scaly shoulders.  The sucking sounds of a world inhaling, the waves pulling back out, leaves enough space for the weight of Eshek's heavy, hard, and hungry growl.  It shakes like a terrible, all-consuming thing in space might.  The sound occupies its own space all around them because it means something.  When something has a purpose like that - it has matter.  And matter, is important.

The changeling anticipates the Its icy death.

It breathes in deep, closes Its eyes, and silences Its mind.

It waits for the chill to penetrate the flesh, cool the blood, slow the muscles -- then freeze.

Will I turn to ash again? It can feel itself wonder in the absence of thought.

A fluttering of ego makes Nizizi murmur something undistinguishable, the sounds gurgling as It talks into the shadow of Eshek.  The sound simply cannot exist between them, a wave rushes back in and the outsider gasps at the chill of the water that claps at the back of Its neck.  Winter will have her way with whomever she chooses, tonight, Nizizi freezes slowly, painfully, ever so humbly in the growing water.

The tide is still coming in, because Eshek has commanded it to.  This is what Nizizi believes.

The First One's teeth sink deep into the snowy bluff of hair where it begins to turn it pink with blood.  Eshek's breath is hot like the centers of a universe as it streams down Nizizi's narrow nose -- its almost as hot as the gaping wounds on Its cheek.  The small one starts to grow unsteady beneath the oppressive might of Its Savior|Its Annihilator and starts to show signs of fatigue.  The light leaves the changeling, mattifying, darkening, growing more and more dense even for Its small size.

Death.

Metamorphosis.

At some point, every star that goes still, will have Its moment to move again -- to explode radiantly, violently, and for no reason at all.  And maybe, in some End, it will be Nizizi that makes the entire universe say to It: Now you bow before me, bow because I will destroy you.

And yet, even though Nizizi shows signs of such an event happening, Its moment has not yet come.
