The Imperial Scorpions

You might have thought it a coincidence, if you had managed to notice.

A pretty young noble wearing a scorpion brooch, a back alley lurker with one embroidered into their hood, a merchant stand with the arachnid burned into the side of one of their crates. Who would question the presence of a few scorpions in the desert?

Such ordinary, everyday occurrences, for surely there could be no connection between these wildly different equines. But then, perhaps, you begin to find them everywhere. Marking a darkened street corner, emblazoned on the crest of a soldier's armor. Engraved into a door handle. They are more subtle, harder to find. Maybe you think you're imagining it.

You might have thought it a coincidence, but there are no coincidences.

Especially not in the Court of Sun and Sand.

Origins

The Imperial Scorpions, as recorded in aged script on parchment faded and torn, were a Solterran order formed and run by the nobility of old. The nobility sought ways to grow their power, extend their reach and maintain their hold on their respective Houses.

They were greedy for control and wealth, and blinded by their obscured ideals. Thus, the order was born. Trusted servants with keen ears, thieves and back alley lurkers paid enough to do their bidding; even soldiers, scholars, any who could be convinced with promises of glory and greatness could be affiliated with the order.

It was odd, though, how the nobles who so rarely cared for anyone but themselves seemed to gain faithful followers to do their bidding. But there were rumors of a powerful sorceress, an enchanter, who could put magic into objects and give them great power. It was told that each noble paid this enchanter handsomely for an item that would gift them the ability to charm whomever they so wished.

If this is to be believed, the nobles would have wielded great power over those around them, ensuring that they reigned on top for years to come.

With or without proof of such enchanted items, it was clear that the order guaranteed one thing: these nobles would have little opposition to their authority and nobody to answer to for their deeds except themselves. These nobles would hold their positions in Solterra's upper echelon and ensure that their traditions, methods, and beliefs were less likely to be challenged. They surrounded themselves with the like-minded and the faithful, and continued to grow their reach, their business and perhaps most of all, their avarice.

They would, from the creation of the Solterra proper to the death of the boy-king, Zolin.

That is when the order met its fateful end. With Zolin and his closest followers gone, with a new sovereign upon the throne, things across Solterra began to change. Many of the Nobles lost their status—their power—and there was nobody left to control, with or without any magical items they might have possessed.

Without a purpose, most members of the order went back to their everyday jobs and positions. Perhaps they forgot about the Scorpions, or maybe they hoped the order would return someday. Regardless, piece by piece it fell apart, until nothing was left but the memories of its existence and an old, dusty box full of records.

Rebirth

Vendetta, as a long standing member of the blackmarket, was all too familiar with the rumors of such an order. She'd never seen proof of it, of course, as very few had, and when Zolin died she too almost forgot about it. For almost 2 years the truth of the Imperial Scorpions was left to collect dust. Until one day she had been browsing through the old, abandoned records kept in a dark and solemn room of what remained of the Court's library.

There, she had found a box with nothing written upon it but what appeared to be a golden stamp of a scorpion. When Vendetta opened it, she found inside every piece of evidence she could have wanted to prove that the Imperial Scorpions had been real. Plans documented and titled, letters signed and stamped. There were lists of names, of numbers, of places. That little forgotten box was a trove of information that Vendetta had promptly kept for herself.

Since that day two years ago, she has been working on restoring a new version of the Imperial Scorpions. They would have new rules, new names, new faces. A new purpose. She would create an order more secret—more selective—than even the original. And she would use the blackmarket to hide them. If you thought the underbelly of Solterra could go no deeper you would be sorely mistaken, for Vendetta's blackmarket work is barely scratching the surface of what is really underneath.

The Scorpions, when stripped of the glamour of being nothing more than Vendetta's various employees, are a deep running information ring. Their stronghold is Solterra, but their reach is nation wide. Scorpions are not only found in the desert, after all.

Vendetta uses the order to seize, smuggle and even sell information, for the right price. While most of information they deal in she keeps to herself, for a discerning (and worthy) enough customer she may be willing to share what she knows. You don't gather as much power beneath you as Vendetta has without knowing the right things, even if you shouldn't, and having the right kind working for you. But that's not all that the order does. Perhaps even more lucrative than information smuggling is the enchantments.

Yes, the rumors were true.

And what good is a blackmarket if it can't supply you with the best? As Mistress of both the Scorpions and the Blackmarket, Vendetta is the one bridge between the two. She keeps them purposefully separate on the day to day level, so as not to risk exposure. She will go to the market to seek out the most unique and high quality items, have them enchanted and turn around and sell them for a high profit: feeding money back into the market for far more than she took out of it.

Beyond the store of enchanted objects at her disposal, it is possible to come to the order directly with an item you wish to have enchanted. The object will be delivered to the enchanter and then, once the enchantment is placed upon it, returned to its owner upon payment.

Roles

To apply for adoptable roles follow this link.

the scorpion mistress: A secondary name within the order only, of The Pearl Mistress. Vendetta, who uncovered the history of the order and brought it back to life after its destruction during the fall of Zolin. She is who all the Scorpions look to for instruction and the only one they are authorized to share any information with unless otherwise said. She is never to be addressed by this title unless accompanied solely by other Scorpions. Vendetta's control over the order spreads deeper than even that of the Blackmarket.

the bantam scorpion: A young but virile Scorpion, the Bantam doubles as both the Mistress’ right hand and her apprentice. Somewhat impressionable but aggressive, loyal and fierce, this Scorpion is tasked with carrying out important duties that the Mistress cannot do herself, whether for reasons of conflict or discretion. The Bantam in general would go to any lengths to please their superior, even if it meant doing the dirty work. They have, perhaps, the highest measure of respect and trust from the Mistress and should not squander it.
- Available

the jeweled scorpion: It is unclear whether this is a title the enchanter gave to themselves or one that was given to them by the order. They are renowned in the underground for their skill in imbuing objects with magical properties; however, they do not work for just anyone, and never for a low price. It is said they live in solitary, rarely interacting with the outside world but for a few entrusted with their location. These few are the ones who deal in handling the items that they enchant for customers.

the umbral scorpions: A pivotal part to the order's success, these Scorpions are the spies. Their loyalty falls to the court of sun and their Mistress, but they live among the other courts with relative ease. They take on roles that will allow them access to as much information as possible, and send coded letters back and forth with their Mistress fairly regularly. They are never to share their origins or intentions with anyone, as any wrong move could spell trouble for the order.
- Limited to below
• the sabah scorpion: The morning scorpion, who roams the streets and halls of the dawn, gathering information from the court of sunrises.
- Available
• the masa scorpion: The evening scorpion, who lives and works by the sea in the court of twilight and sunset, searching and discovering
- Available
• the allayl scorpion: The midnight scorpion, who claims the dark alleyways and shadowed recesses of the nightfall court, and all its knowledge.
- Available

the chrome scorpions: These Scorpions blend seamlessly into multiple roles. A merchant who gives first pick to the order. A thief that does information runs. A noble that hosts meetings of the Scorpions. These are the roles that keep the order in business, and have an everyday impact on how it runs. They infiltrate every part of daily Solterran life, and without them the order has no backbone.
- Unlimited

the scorpion sting: The Sting are the muscle of the order. They are the guard and the intimidation factor. These Scorpions are always present when handling and delivering any sort of enchanted item, lest it end up in the wrong hands. They may accompany the Mistress at any given time on business, and less frequently the Bantam. The Sting could also be considered enforcers to some extent. If there are any outstanding debts to the order, or any who try to get away with not paying for their services, it is the Sting who finds and extorts them.
- Unlimited

the legacy scorpions: Fundamentally the Legacy Scorpions could fall within any of the above roles. They might be part of the Sting, perhaps a successful merchant or an old soldier. The main difference is that these Scorpions are the remnants of the original order when it disbanded. This title sets them apart in The Mistress' mind, because she just might pay a little more attention to them than she does the others. Wouldn't want the old ways to cause problems with the new ones.
- Unlimited

the scorpion council: Not an open rank, this is a small group of the most trustworthy of the Scorpions, The Mistress brings these select few together when information falls into their hands of greater importance than themselves. The Council doesn't gather for petty squabbles or even the juiciest of gossip. They are reserved for information that could change the whole of Novus, for better or for worse, and to decide how to proceed with it.
- Limited, chosen by Vendetta
