THE STARS IGNITE

Streaks of pale saffron and warm apricot were slowly infringing upon the deep periwinkle blue of the sky, signaling the beginning of dawn and the sun’s slow rise to glory. The golden, hay-like grasses of Eluetheria were heavy with thawing dew; the night’s crisp air was slowly heating to a refreshing climate indicative of spring. The deep emerald conifer trees surrounding the plains were littered with deciduous trees whose leaves were only starting to sprout again.

The rays of the sun flashed against amethyst feathers, revealing the mare standing halfway beneath the shade of an evergreen, and halfway exposed within the long strands of grass that sashayed against her ivory limbs. Thick hair unbound, it waved lazily on the morning breeze, shrouding her observant gaze with the wind’s every change of direction. The fiery appendages extending past the length of her wings behaved similarly, small tufts of feathers chafing against each other. Her mismatched eyes were unfocused even as they gazed out at the land before her, her mind quite obviously ruminating elsewhere.

She was far from the tranquility and security of the Night Court. Her pensive wanderings had eventually brought her to the free land between Delumine and Solterra, two kingdoms she had yet to visit and familiarize herself with. No matter where she traveled or what company she kept, her thoughts kept straying back to the memory of flames against her flesh, to the ghost of a stallion painted with midnight and stars. Her thoughts kept betraying her.

With a frustrated stamp of her bronzed hoof, she broke into a sudden gallop, brows furrowing in determination almost as if she could outrun her past. Her large wings stretched to their full potential, the sun reflecting against the deep hue of her feathers. She didn’t take flight; she had only desired the feel of freedom between each plume, the power beneath her hooves as they threw up the fragile dirt of a new season. With her attention on her grounded flight, her mind emptied. She became a part of the land, not a creature haunted by the loss of love, the deceit of family, or the burden of prestigious titles.

The distant sound of thunder brought the mare skidding to a halt, hooves kicking up a cloud of dust. Her salmon-stained muzzle softened into a smile as she pinpointed the source of the disturbance; the burly brown bodies of a herd of bison now occupied the opposite end of Eluetheria. Pricking her ears, she let out a rather undignified snort, signaling her presence to the ungulates and to any other creature currently roaming the expansive plains.

For other lands, for new sights, and for more to learn - that was what his wings truly throbbed for and naught could keep him in Terrastella for more than a number of days. Whether or not this young man's thirst for wisdom would ever be fulfilled was quite beyond anyone's imagination or prediction - Each hoof was destined to sweep over a new land, his eyes ever cast wantonly at the horizon.
Duties to his court when given would likely prove anchor enough, Plus, a family once found would surely provide the humble home he also scoured for.

Today though he had flown; a gangly colt of brimstone and dying embers had set his path past the godly mountain, the obelisk and pinnacle of the realm (or so he had come to discern). Damascus had flown to the west of the peak but close to the mountain, wishing to aim true and close to it's rushing sides. Strangely, he felt a trembling fear come upon him as he passed it by. Mountains - they were so mystical, so great, and yet they only ever spoke when angry.

Dohv keenly awaited their destination from the saddle-like patch of fluffy feathers upon his steed's whither, an area he could almost always be found holding onto a feather shaft for added security. During these long flights there was plenty of time for discussion, and their minds were almost never silent with endless chattering mind speech. Often it was lessons the old mouse had to teach, the kind akin to 'don't ever wake a hippogriff cause-' or 'I'll tell yew why ya shouldn't ever rinse yer knickers in the sea'-. Half the time his sermons didn't apply to the dark colt (he most certainly did not wear knickers) but he enjoyed the company and Dohv's happy chatter all the same.

The pair had rested for the night on the other side of the mountain, stirring only when the light of dawn threatened the lowest star. Northbound once again their path was set, though it was the distant trumpet  that stopped him from his take-off.
Remaining still in the grass, his coat soon becoming washed with a velvety tone of pink, Damascus crowned his gaze over the magnificent fields.

She was quickly spotted like a flower among thorns, though from his distance it was hard to decipher her colouring given the extreme early-morning light which had composed the entire scene in little other colours than pink, apricot and more pink. Damascus did not dare make any attempt to close the gap just yet, fearful that it might be rude or that he would be unwelcome. He would, however, send a cheer her way.
"Greeting!" was his call to the lady, one who stood so radiant under the waning stars.

She found tranquility watching the herd of bison in the distance, their heavily furred chocolate bodies moving slowly as they grazed at the budding grass in the plains. Her heart decelerated and her tumultuous thoughts relaxed. She knew the ungulates focused on three things: finding their next source of grain, protecting their young, and staying together — one unit. Theirs was a simple life, yet it was complete. A touch of envy sprung in the mare's chest, but she ignored it with a subtle shake of her fiery tresses.

The amethyst splashes upon her bodice were painted magenta in the morning's light, tinged with a subtle orange glow. It was as if the sun were yawning, commanding the world to wake up. Closing her bi-colored orbs and lifting her refined crown to the sky, she obeyed, letting the rays warm her pale face.

"Greeting!" The sudden clamor rattled her stillness, a mar upon the morning's peace. Ears swayed backward, not pinned but certainly not receptive to any turbulence that may come with the meeting of a stranger. She turned her gaze toward the greeter, and her curiosity was immediately sparked. His legs were still slightly gangly, although he was growing into them. Still a youngling, then — and while he would be considered conventionally handsome, his appearance was actually quite comical when shrouded in the blush of the sky. His heralding had been incomplete, as though he were still grasping the structure of the common tongue.

She trotted forward, banner held high but not conceitedly so; if anything, her parents had honed the quiet confidence that she now exuded. As she neared him, she halted, careful to keep a safe distance away despite his apparent youth. In her nearness, her eyes settled on the small creature on the stranger's back; it had unusually long ears, and was nestled in an odd nest of down feathers. Danger came in all forms, even found in the shelter of family and the innocence of rodents.

"Hello,"  she addressed him cautiously, her sultry alto tones groomed to be neutral and strong. She had no idea of the bronze stallion's intent, nor did she particularly want to introduce herself quite yet. Folding her wings to her body, she waited to see what the unusual horse would say or do next.
