Jane
Jane didn’t expect for the mare to tumble as she did, and Jane rushed to catch her. It was still surprising, the newness that presented itself in Veil’s frame. She looked like she contained millennia; the violet glow of her eyes nearly divine in quality, and so it always caught Jane off guard when something supposedly simple had never been seen before. A bed. It seemed so clear cut to Jane, and yet the concept of walls, floors and beds seemed as foreign to the Veil Nebula as the Kingdom of Atlantis was to Jane.

But laughter burst from Veil, and Jane curved toward her; adoring at the sound. It was so natural and soft like strawberry lemonade. Jane laughed too, although not erupting. Unlike her earlier interaction with the landlady; this laughter was real and soft and full of love. Veil let Jane’s words wash over her, but Jane just nudged her carefully. Dust brushed over Veil’s face and Jane watched it pass. How strange, for such magical and rich dust to be in a place like this; of sour daylight and hedonism’s consequences.

Jane turned and Veil followed, unquestioning. Always unquestioning, frighteningly unquestioning, Jane noticed that she would have to care for what Veil dabbled in. Hearing out for her friend, the air was once again filled with the scent of pepper. Food and heat carried on the wind; the season of fruition and progress, of rebirth after a winter that one barely experienced in the Day Court.

A few shops lined the street, the scent of starch, potatoes, and foods of many other places everywhere. “What do you want?” She asked, trying to leave place for Veil’s decisions. She tapped her nose to Veil’s and then inhaled, “Find something to eat for us.”

Visions of your pretty face send me into hyper space
Caught up in a palentary world
This rock was so odd, unique.

Every new sensation was just that, new. Every situation unique, every moment was special because it was always a first. First breath of air. First scent of pollen. First sneeze, first stumble, first time seeing a sunrise, a sunset, a raindrop, a snowflake. It was all new to her, and in a way, it made it magical. It made this world innocent. It made Veil naive. It was for that reason that it could be considered a blessing that she ran into Jane first. Jane who was willing to show her the way, to set her sights on the right path, not let her be swayed by what she might not know, what she wouldn't understand. With Jane, she had found safety.

With Jane, she'd found family.

Sure, it wasn't the same as being part of the sky, part of the star systems, and part of the universe. When she knew what was going in any galaxy, any nebula, any milkway. When she knew the secrets of the universe, when she was part of those secrets. She missed that since of connection, of being part of something bigger. Sure, she was still a star, still part of the world, but it was different now, she felt smaller, less significant . . . mortal, fleeting, passing. Was this how those on this rock lived day by day, life by life - with a sense of mortality hanging around them?

Veil didn't like those feelings.

She ignored them for brightness when she could. But the laugh was new, not that Veil would know that was what it was. To her, it was bright, it was warmth, it was vibrancy and uncaring, rich and selfless. Filling. Jane seemed to lean into it as well, laughing too, and Veil's smile grew, violet eyes dancing, as the stars captured in those galaxy orbs seemed to twinkle with warmth, holding secrets, holding love, holding the unknown in their depths. She settled her steps, finding her balance again, before turning to follow her friend.

She didn't know where they were going.

But she didn't mind. The scent of spice returned, and Veil felt a sense of something . . . strength? Power? No . . . not quite. But there was a sort of pride to it. Pride, and . . . championship? Whatever, she felt something about being able to overcome the pepper the second time, and it was a good something, proof that she was settling in, proof she was becoming part of this world. She breathed deeply instead, taking that spice, that pepper in - only to half cough and half choke as the spice seemed to triple from that action. Noted, learned, don't do that.

And then suddenly there was the scent of more.

All around her, different things that had her suddenly feeling weak in the center of her body - no, not weak, but yearning. Like a star wanting fuel, even though her dust bleeding off her was proof she had more than enough. Her friend made noises again, and she turned towards her, before having her nose tapped, and a breath in. Veil hesitated, remembering the last time she'd done that, and the pepper had caught her off guard. But she did as her friend did, breathing in. Instantly that weakness, that yearning increased, and she sniffed again for what made her feel that way, before starting off in a random direction, following what she breathed in.

It didn't take her long before she found it.

A small placed, tucked up behind a curtain, easy to overlook from the shadow of another building. Veil glanced towards Jane, smiling with reassurance, as her heart hummed with excitement. She pushed the curtain aside, using her wing to keep it held up for both herself, and her friend. Inside, the building was cooler than outside, thanks to the mud-style bricks that helped reflect the heat. The place had a quiet hum of conversation, though the two mares seemed mostly overlooked, even as a waitress smiled from behind a bar, welcoming them in.

Veil nodded once to Jane, this place would do.

Notes:: Figured they needed a quiet little joint, and Veil's nose totally brought her to a place that has some sort of fruit pie, I can almost guarantee it ;)

Jane
In many ways, watching Veil was watching a young child. It made Jane ponder on what it must be like at home, for the younger brother who had evidently replaced her. And yet he was no brother, he lacked name and body in her mind’s eye, while Veil Nebula actually existed. So much less equine and yet so much more, her skin tangible and her voice whispering with that element of surprise and self-revelation, like the coming together of a sewn garment.

It wasn’t like they would accept Jane if she came back. No, Jane’s status within her family had been made perfectly known, and all that remained were the painted formalities that came with an upper class that protected itself. Like an injured animal it hid its throat, kept its heart buried beneath an arched back and raised hairs on the mane. Her name would be spoken as formality alone. This, Jane was sure of.

And Veil Nebula followed Jane in much the same way as someone who were blood could have done. Yet they were different down to their core. There was even the question of whether Veil bled or not- they said the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb, but what liquids even existed beneath the fibres and beauty of Veil’s impeccable, intransient skin. Her hide, unspeakable like the villain in a child’s story or a face behind fog, shivered beneath Jane’s attention.

Veil accepted everything; the spice no longer an enemy. She embraced it, even a bit too much as she proceeded to choke on the sensation of pepper entering her throat. Jane didn’t comment on it, watching her with a tender compassion. Jane understood how much this world must be for Veil Nebula. If Jane had been taken off guard in those first weeks in Solterra, how much worse must it be for the creature that was literally extraterrestrial, whose introductions to the world of Novus were changing at every moment. But that was the world, in many ways- changing, forever.

It was no surprise, then, that Veil Nebula then led Jane in the direction of sweetness. They ducked beneath a door, and the waitress guided them to a place that was hidden from the hustle and bustle of Solterra.

May we have the menu?” she said quietly, keeping her voice low to match the energy of the restaurant.

Veil knew there where things she didn't know.

Things she didn't know about the world, about these beings who lived on this rock. About Jane, about herself. And yet, locked away in her head was so much that she did know. So much she didn't know how to share. She had been part of something bigger at one point, and at times, she could almost imagine, she was still in that collective fold. The way the universe knows, the way molecules remember, and the way she was something bigger. She wasn't a mere being . . . She was a star, a galactic anomaly.

And yet, she still felt so frail.

So small.

So lost.

She didn't like these kinds of feelings. The white and grey, bleak colors painted over memories of a time lost in space, surrounded in silence. Lonely. She liked the world as it was now. With Jane by her side, where she didn't need to be alone anymore. It was like opening up her eyes, and suddenly the world was in technicolor vibrance, rather than the bleak darkness, with the only pinpoints of light being billions of light-years away. Veil's world was full of color, of sound now.

It had been thanks to Jane.

And so she followed Jane with no hesitation, having a trust that came from somewhere deeper than naivety. Jane was a comfort, a sense of home she hadn't felt in so long. And with Veil's budding magic, she knew it wasn't a misplaced trust. There was no cautionary warning of foreboding betrayal. Just a calm happiness, a sense of shelter that Veil hadn't known she craved. And it was with Jane's comforting presence that she found herself taking in the world fully, even if she took in too much pepper as it settled in her muzzle, her throat, choking her up. She managed an awkward smile to Jane, embarrassed at her mistake, even as they moved along.

The restaurant was just as perfect.

Her friend spoke, and the mare from before offered them both an odd rectangle filled with pictures and odd symbols that Veil couldn't begin to decipher, and so instead she turned towards Jane, her expression lost and filled with a sudden uncertainty that she had no idea what to do now. It was clear they were here to eat, as that is what others around them where doing, as they conversed over dishes in that language Veil couldn't understand.

But how does the mute order?

Especially when she had no idea what any of it was.
