Quote of the Season
Bexley gives him a cold, dark, beautiful smile. “Wanna see a trick?” she asks, eyes glowing with feral self-satisfaction. The bare of her teeth in a mock-grin is nothing less than terrifying. “I can make you see ghosts.” do the hungry ever sleep?

Voltaire is a six-year-old medium build warmblood mix, and is 17.1 hh tall. His base coat color could be described as blue roan, with a spattering of white, silver, and grey spots along his neck, shoulders, haunches, and upper legs. It is also divided into patches on his body. Darker blue-black divides him through the middle, and across his spine like a dorsal stripe. He has a long mane and tail, which have an ombre effect from black to blue. His eyes are large, expressive, and blue like the summer sky, with a tear-track style marking along the sides of his face. His face is also marked with a long white snip, from the middle of his face to his lips. Most notable to his appearance is a large, glass-like, clear horn, not spiraled like a typical unicorn, but more a long and jagged sort of appearance. This horn gives him a striking silhouette, and combined with his warrior’s build, it is easy to assume Voltaire a fighter. However, this gentle soul is more of an observer of the world, relying more on his senses and impressions than physical strength. With a calm-headed demeanor and a body built for stamina instead of brawn, he is an anomaly of sorts at the Day Court.
At his core, Voltaire is a gentle soul – an old soul. He is a creature who is committed to do good in this world, and who strives daily for atonement of his sins. Deeply religious, he is a creature who seeks to bring peace to the volatile world around him – in part because he is optimistic enough to want the world to be good, and kind, and just… but also in part because he wishes nothing more than to make good on his past. It is the horror of his nightmares that fuels his need for retribution and for soul searching.

In the nights, he hides himself away, wishing to be alone with his thoughts and the haunting of his memories. By day, he works toward bringing glory to the god of day, Solis. In the Day Court, he serves as a caretaker. It is his need to care for others that serves as his atonement for the ills of his past. While a thousand rights may never heal a wrong, Voltaire has committed his days to servitude and compassion for the broken. It is this trait that sets him apart from the warriors of the Day Court. For though he can fight, he does not. He will not.

Voltaire is a quiet sort of creature, one who relies fully on his senses. He sees much more than the average beast, not because of some strange magic, but because he relies on the power of observation. He hears more than the average beast, because he talks far less than he listens. He is even tempered, gentle, and strives to be fair and just in all things. This is his cross to bear, and while he has taken a vow to help and to serve all, he cannot help but know the fate which awaits those who choose to turn on their base humanity.

Positive traits: Gentle, Even-Tempered, Compassionate, Healer, Merciful, Stoic
Negative traits: Cursed, Condemnatory, Fatalistic, Regimented/Dutiful
It was a dark night long ago, when Voltaire was damned to hell. Born as a child into a warrior’s herd, he was raised with only one purpose in mind – survival. His herd was a hierarchical one, where the strongest fighter became the leader. Bloodshed and murder was the only way to guarantee a rank of significance, and the world was harsh and unforgiving. For his first three years, every day for Voltaire was a day that passed without him knowing whether tomorrow would come. He fought, only because he must for survival… but he made a vow to never kill. For to kill is to tear the soul into pieces, each one tearing at what shards of humanity remain.

As time passed, the herd became fraught with corruption and hatred spread among the world, chinking at the security that once was and replacing it with fear. It was the product of the leader Kovu that led to the spiral – down, down, down into the darkest of days. There could be no fighting after time, no challenging to keep order and balance. Life simply became a new order – obey, or die. It is in these harshest of times that Voltaire decided he must break his vow, and break the endless cycle of pain that Kovu created.

That fateful day, Voltaire led the mutiny that would eventually be his downfall. It was planned, but on that day, uncertainty and panic overcame the boy and he hesitated even as he came across the leader, alone on the mount. In the moment of Voltaire’s hesitation, Kovu saw a spark of weakness, goading the boy and taunting that he could never bring himself to harm anyone, let alone the king. Fury filled the peaceful creature, even as Kovu danced around him, provoking him to fight. And in that provocation, there was a fight for his very humanity.

If you asked, the boy could not tell you how he came to find the crystal shard – jagged and splintering to the touch. He cannot remember the way it felt in his grasp, but only the way it felt when it plunged into his heart, cursing Voltaire’s very soul – damning him for the same crime he vowed never to commit. For when he took a life, the very instrument of his choosing became his curse to bear. And along his face for all to see, the crystal shines today – a stark reminder of the past he tries so desperately to atone for.
