Adelheid is a unicorn of mixed breeding. She appears largely thoroughbred in make, with long legs, a slim body, and a deep chest. There's also a decent amount of Tennessee Walking Horse in her, shown in the shortness of her back and the deep set of her hind end and legs, making her strides long and overreaching while a dash of Arabian blood is more subtle, offering a heated temperament and a slight polish to her features, but no obvious physical characteristics. Her head displays a straight profile, large eyes, and small ears. Her hooves are solid, not cloven, and black. Her tail is long and flexible with hair growing only at the end. Though generally clean, she leaves her mane unkempt much of the time, only loosely braiding the forelock to keep it from obstructing her vision.

Unicorns are most widely known for their horns, of which Adelheid has two. They erupt from her forehead and sweep backward in a slight spiral with minimal ridge detailing, similar to those of an African Kudu.

She is a heavily dappled rose grey in color, much of her original chestnut coloring still visible along her topline and in the base of her mane and tail, the lighter sections across her lower body appearing almost faintly pink from the mixture of red and white. Her points are dark due to her black skin, especially around the muzzle and large leg joints.

Her eyes are hazel in color, a mixture of greens and browns that may appear more one than the other in certain types of light.

She is fractured, opposing traits always battling for supremacy in her personality. Both impulsive and thoughtful, though rarely both at the same time, she is outwardly standoffish while still being deeply curious about the world around her and seeking inclusion with others despite her fierce sense of independence, often faltering awkwardly between the two.

She is quick to judge, at first susceptible to shallow impressions based on the moment, but tends to dwell on events after the fact, regularly admitting error and changing her mind in the quiet of solitude or at the behest of an even tempered ally.

Again at odds with herself, she is both analytical and sentimental, aware that feelings are what give action purpose and meaning, but not unwilling to examine those feelings and make decisions against them, difficult as it may be. In these moments of turmoil she may lash out, frustration getting the best of her, but she’s quick to appologize when wrong and sincere in admitting her own faults.

She has a rowdy sense of humor, using sarcasm and shocking statements to build camaraderie with those she enjoys the company of and drive away those she does not. Though this sometimes leads others to believe that her emotions are only surface deep, she is a romantic at heart, committing fully and deeply to those few things she lets close.

A knowledge seeker, she has always found it repugnant to simply accept the status quo, preferring to confirm or invalidate thoughts and opinions herself, some would say to a fault, but she would say that the truth is often twisted and interpreted so that it fits an individual’s previously held beliefs, which in itself is a perversion of fact and to be avoided at all costs. Thus, even “common knowledge” is worth a cursory investigation.
They told her the story at a young age, the one about the King that killed his kingdom. It was a part of their history. There were even some that still traced their lineage back to him in one way or another, though this was vehemently denied in public. The ones who couldn't hide it, the ones with the "blood beard" were ostracized, hated and feared for the tragedy their very appearance brought to mind. It always seemed so unfair.

The "Killing Ground" was still there, unmarked and abandoned. It was forbidden to build any type of memorial, to leave any lasting proof of what happened there. She visited once, hoping to learn something more about the scarce and one sided narrative, but the small copse of trees and open field at their back were simply that, an untended field and some gnarled old trees. She couldn't say exactly what it was about the story that bothered her, but it nagged her, brought on morbid curiosity, childish obsession, and scholarly diligence all in equal measure. There was something wrong about it.

She wanted to know the truth, then began to need to know as her horns matured and took on a hauntingly similar look to those of the King in the story. She wondered if this legend was her legacy too. It served her right, they said, for causing so much upset. Maybe her skepticism was all a ploy to avoid being picked on, they accused. Cruel words, but empty to her ears. Her horns had no bearing on what was true or false in the story, as those events had happened long ago. They were being irrational, desperate to discredit her by any means necessary and unwilling to help any farther, so she sought knowledge in neighboring territories, kingdoms that had existed in some form at the time of the story.

She found that foreigners held much calmer views of the legend, few of them having been personally affected. All shared the same sad sentiments toward the outcome and agreed that a terrible deed had been done, but some posited that the King had not been universally hated as her childhood peers had insisted, that he had been a good ruler prior to that winter. Even more intriguing, they alluded to the King’s body never having been found, whispered in hushed tones that perhaps he had not been killed and buried beneath the bones of his victims, or at least, that no investigation had ever been allowed and no identifiable remains ever shown. Though only hearsay, she felt validated in her quest and hurried on.

An elderly Pegasus that worked as a courier divulged that his father once told him there had been missives asking for aid from the King, all of them lost, ignored, or destroyed. A young soldier was convinced to share a cautionary tale he’d heard once about a regiment of border guards abandoning their post for personal gain, ending in ruin and tragedy of course, though he doubted it was based in fact. Each strand of information offered insight and direction and she weaves them together with care, cautious of her own investment in the story now, worried that she’ll let personal bias color the investigation. Even so, she’s sure that there’s more to be discovered.
