Quote of the Season
"Her mother lives all in day, her father all in night, and Apolonia straddles the thin, dusky line halving her heart with not so much grace - startling awake in the middle of the night or at the crack of dawn, trying to find some way to compromise." — Apolonia in

A woman bathed in the golden rays of the sun, Soleil is not as delicate looking as she appears. Her lineage is a tapestry woven together over time, though the strongest threads lend themselves to the Anglo-Arabian. Her neck is long and proud, holding a head that is fine. Her body is strong and compact, carrying the refinement and endurance of the Arabian as well as the speed of a Thoroughbred. Graceful, like a dancer, but with the endurance of a marathon-runner.

She carries herself like the nobility that she is, her head held high -- perhaps a little too high. Her strides are long and full of practice grace, years of lessons unfading even as a refugee in Delumine. Her voice is a lilting bell, her words colored by her upbringing, the silver spoon in her mouth apparent even in her speech. Her body is often perfumed with oils and the like, the fragrance depending on her mood. Naturally, she smells of jasmine and lavender -- although it is rare that she is without her fragrances.

Her coat comes in shades of gold, a stunning Dunalino that is one of the more prominent features of others in her lineage. A dark dorsal stripe lines her back, as well as the striping that appears on her legs but no other distinguishing marks. A notable feature are the large pair of wings that she has, similar in color to her body. The end feathers are the same color as her blonde hair, and a ridge of dark color matching her dorsal stripe separating the two colors. Shes at a fair 15.2 hands high, her entire body symmetrical and smooth. She does not allow a hair of the blonde mass that is her mane and tail to be out of place, although she wears it in a variety of styles. When she is holding audiences, she wears it loosely and finely decorated -- and when she travels or visits the markets, it is often in a braid. The only thing that remains the same is the golden butterfly pin that she always wears in her hair, placed somewhere on her at all times. It is one of her most prized possessions.

Her eyes are a soft gray-blue color, sharp and expressive. They are the most revealing thing about her, showing her emotions when she would rather hide them.

Other people are not to be trusted, merely to be used as pawns for furthering her goals. She views them from an arm’s length, as most of her beloved family members were killed in the uprising. She views relationships as something to lose, so her reluctance to go beyond pleasantries is quite deep. She is suave and charming, charismatic even, with a voice that is sweet as honey and a tongue sharp enough to be a dagger in the back. She takes care of herself, especially now that she has returned to Solterra to seek the justice she feels was so blatantly ignored following the rise of new royalty.

She is surprisingly open to the idea of outside blood coming to rule on the throne, though she liked her cousin Zolin well enough for appearance’s sake (even though she thought him a spoiled brat). However, she is distinctly distrustful of the lower classes and views them down the bridge of her nose. She wants those that were responsible for the breakdown of her life to be held responsible, and since she can not directly pinpoint certain individuals she views them all as criminals.

Soleil is confident in herself, perhaps overly so, and seeks audiences with the highly influential in order to help further herself. Before the rebellion, she had no interest in politics or anything remotely intellectual -- but these days she can often be found studying books that she has borrowed from Delumine’s libraries, or the limited library of Solterra. She has one other interest, in painting -- an artist who prefers bright and vibrant colors although she had not touched a canvas since her flight to Delumine.

On the inside, Lei feels very isolated. Because she is afraid to get too close to anyone, she leads a very lonely life. Meals by herself, walks by herself, attending events by herself. She’s relegated herself to a life of purpose in the political atmosphere, and that means she can afford no weaknesses like familial ties. She feels that she must be ready to lose anyone, turn her back on everyone in any given moment.

family secrets are better left buried

Leilani was a noble of lesser birth, swept up by love into the Hajakha house. Her husband, Hevern, was something of an emissary of the noble house -- and met her on one of his many travels. They eloped, much to the chagrin of the house, and tongues wagged about their relationship from the very beginning. It would not take long for their love to blossom into pregnancy -- which set the tongues wagging all the more. Had he married her because of this child? Hevern was a righteous man, and would not leave a bastard child to sully his name. Hevern protected his young wife the best that he was able, sheltering her from the unkindness of the upper nobility.

Leilani labored through the night, determined to keep the child from being born in darkness as was the proud tradition of her house. She was born at the height of summer, at the height of noon when it was believed that she would be the most blessed. She was tiny and golden, her birth celebrated with fervor by her parents and by most of a begrudging house. Her name was to be Soleil -- named after Solis as thanks for his favor, a homage to the queens of the past, as well as a slight nod to her own mother.

Her parents were doting on the girl, protective of her in every aspect. They indulged her every desire and whim, seeing to it that she never lacked for anything. She basked in the glory of privilege for most of her youth. She was happy to be catered to, and saw her life laid out in front her like a road map -- complete with an advantageous marriage and her own children.

Then, everything changed.

Zolin’s death brought down a wave of terror unlike anything that she had ever seen. The nobility scattered to the winds like sand, each faction of the family splintering in hopes of saving themselves. Chaos reigned around them, fear surging through the nobility like a blast of flame. Hevern took his small family, including a young Ieshan whom Soleil was betrothed to, and went into hiding. Leilani was not a pegasus, thus she was not able to safely exit the city like the rest of them were and Hevern would not leave her behind.

Unfortunately, it would not matter how well they hid. The court descended into madness and bloodshed, and the rebellion came beating down upon their door within the day. Terrified, Soleil was ushered into a small space hidden within the hideaway -- her mother’s face the last thing that she would see of her family. She can still hear the echoing of their screams, haunting her to this very day.

Soleil had to break herself out of the small hiding place she’d been forced into, not an easy feat given how delicately she had grown. By the time she freed herself, the hideaway was aflame and she had no time to grieve her dead. The gilded mare stumbled through the smoke, coughing as she broke free into the cold night air. She could hear the screams of others like her as she took the sky, fleeing from the only place she had ever known.

Alone in the world, Soleil did not have the first clue how to survive on her own. She wandered out into the desert in her flight, collapsing with exhaustion before daybreak. It took days for her to reach Delumine, seeking refuge from the uncertainty within her own country.

Delumine became her home away from home, and much changed about Soleil following the slaughter of her family. Rage filled her heart, wiping away the anguish she felt and replacing it with the burning desire to see justice for her family delivered. As things began to settle once again, the rebellion quieting and the nobility beginning to try to weasel their way back to the top of things -- still she remained. Her mind turned to politics, as it never had before -- surprisingly adept at it despite the fact she had often ignored her father’s attempts to teach her.

She flourished, no longer catered to and forced to provide for herself -- creating a strong-willed woman where a complacent child had been. Soleil had been through a trial by fire and had managed to come out on the other side, she was different from the girl she had been fleeing the rebellion.

Recently, she has returned to Solterra and seeks to right the wrongs against her.
