Restricted Items

Before we delve deeper into the Restricted Items, we want to explain why we’ve restricted items in the first place: to encourage interaction and originality on Novus. All approved Restricted Items can be found on the Records Page. We currently have two types of restricted items:

Interactive Items Original Items
Items that have an optional quest, which will explain how these items were obtained. No two quests are ever the same, as they are individually written and personalized for each character and item! Questing will earn your character additional experience. Often carriable or aesthetic items that, by themselves, do not have quests. These are items that we regulate to avoid them becoming too common. To assist with this, these items cost varying amount of signos.

    Redeeming a Restricted Item:

    • Purchase the item from the Agora or win the item in a contest.

    • Respond to the appropriate Restricted Items Redemption thread and wait for staff approval.
      • Interactive items: You may opt for a quest or no quest. Original items do not have quests unless paired with an Enchantment.

    • Once staff has fully approved the item, you're free to begin roleplaying with it IC'ly.

    • For Interactive Items, you can now redeem Experience.

    • If you're found RPing a restricted item without going through these steps, you will receive a Tier (1) Warning.

    Updating a Restricted Item:

    • Post the appropriate form in the Updating an Item thread.

    • Items can be updated once every 8 real life months.

    • Once the item is updated, the previous version can no longer be used.

    • To have multiple items that you can switch between at will, a second of the item will need to be purchased and redeemed.

    • Changing an item without permission will acquire a Tier (1) Warning and the item being revoked without refund.

Questing

Questing is a unique event where a quest thread will be posted that requires the character to respond before additional EXP can be claimed. All of our Interactive Items are "Questable," which allows the character to gain additional experience for obtaining and ICly threading for them!
    Helpful notes and rules:

    • Questing is only available for Interactive Items. However Enchantments are an Interactive Item, so you can earn Experience for questing Original Items if they're paired with an Enchantment!

    • Questing is never mandatory, but all Interactive Items can be quested for if the player chooses. Opting for a Quest will allow you to claim extra Experience for your character.

      • "Gaining an Interactive Agora Item" - the act of purchasing and posting the Restricted Item Redemption form - is worth +1EXP.
      • "Interactive Agora Item: Staff-written Short Quest" is worth an additional +1EXP, for a total of +2EXP Overall per Interactive Item.
      • "Interactive Agora Item: Member-written Short Quest" is worth an additional +1EXP, for a total of +2EXP Overall per Interactive Item.
      • "Interactive Agora Item: Member-written Extended Quest" is worth an additional +2EXP, for a total of +3EXP Overall per Interactive Item.

    • If you opt to not quest for the item when posting the Resricted Item Redemption form, it is not possible to quest for it later on.

Staff-written Short Quest process (worth +1EXP)

    • You post your Restricted Item Redemption and in the "Opting for a Quest?" section, write "Staff-written short quest" and fill out the Thread Preferences sections.
      • Once again: If you do not opt for a quest now, you cannot quest later!

    • Staff will then review your Item to make sure it meets all standards and rules.
      • If the item needs adjustments, staff will reach out to you with what needs to be done.
      • Once the Item has been approved, you are free to begin roleplaying IC'ly with it.

    • Staff will then create a Quest for your character to respond to based upon the thread preferences you provided.
      • These posts will always come from the Random Event staff account.
      • Quests are handwritten, completely unique, and personalized to the item and character that is participating in them.
      • Due to their unique nature, please allow up to 14 days for the Quest thread to be posted; please reach out to staff after this point if your quest is not up!

    • Once the Quest thread is posted, your character will need to respond with a 500 word or more post.

    • Once you've responded to the Quest thread, post an Experience Redemption and link to your Quest thread and Restricted Item Redemption post.
      • Staff will review the response to make sure it meets the requirements, then award your character the +1EXP.

Member-written Short Quest process (worth +1EXP)

    • You post your Restricted Item Redemption and in the "Opting for a Quest?" section, write "Member-written short quest."

    • Once the item is approved, you may write and post your own Quest for your character and their item.
      • When posting your thread, select the "Interactive Quest" ([Quest]) thread prefix.
      • Must have at least (1) post from your character, which must be 500 words or more.
      • The thread does not need to be a "complete" thread nor an IC exit from your character.

    • Once you've written the Quest thread, post an Experience Redemption and link to your Quest thread and Restricted Item Redemption post.
      • Staff will review the response to make sure it meets the requirements, then award your character the +1EXP.

Member-Written Extended Quest process (worth +2EXP)

    • You post your Restricted Item Redemption and in the "Opting for a Quest?" section, write "Member-written extended quest."

    • Once the item is approved, you may write your own Quest for your character and their item.
      • When posting your thread, select the "Interactive Quest" ([Quest]) thread prefix.
      • The details of the quest are completely up to you! Please reach out to staff if you are unsure if an element is allowed (chances are it is).
      • These must be completed threads with another member's character OR the NPC account. This means your character must have a minimum of 4 IC posts, including an exit.
      • Quests must be wholly dedicated to the task. This means that the majority of each post should be centered around the quest and its theme!

    • Once you've completed the Quest thread, post an Experience Redemption and link to your Quest thread and Restricted Item Redemption post.
      • Staff will review the thread to make sure it meets the requirements, then award your character the +2EXP.

Interactive Items

Once you have purchased these items and posted in the appropriate Restricted Items Redemption Thread, staff will review your redemption. If you opted to Quest for this item, staff will then post a Random Event thread for your character to respond to. Once such is done (or if a quest wasn't opted for), your item will be added to your Postbit if applicable and to the Records Page. From there, you are free to begin roleplaying with said item.

Interactive: Active Magic -- 2,000 Signos
Magic is arguably one of the most sought-after things on Novus, and also one of the hardest to obtain. This item will allow you to choose a magic affinity for your character. Once purchased, you will need to describe how their magic develops at all levels (their 'Magic Tree') in the 'Magic' section of your character's profile, and staff will have to approve such before you are able to use it.

    - See the Magic guidebook section for more information.

Interactive: Secondary Magic -- 2,500 Signos
As of October 2019, characters can now have up to two Active Magics! Secondary Magic must be purchased after Active Magic, and will allow you to choose a second magic affinity for your character. Once purhcased, you will need to describe how their magic develops at all levels (their 'Magic Tree') in the 'Magic' section of your character's profile, and staff will have to approve such before you are able to use it.

    - Comes with all the same perks and stipulations as Active Magic, but has a different levelling system!

    - See the Magic guidebook section for more information.

Interactive: Passive Magic -- 1,000 Signos
This item will allow you to choose a passive magic affinity for your character. Once purchased, you will need to describe the passive magic in the 'Magic' section of your character's profile, and staff will have to approve the specific elements of your magic.

    - See the Magic guidebook section for more information.

Interactive: Enchantment -- 300 Signos + the cost of the Original Item you are Enchanting
This is a special Interactive Item that is stackable to most other Original Restricted Items! Enchanting an item consitutes adding magical or unnatural touches. This will allow a lantern's flame to never die, sparks to fly off of materials not normally spark-producing, or more! This is currently Novus' only stackable item, meaning it works in conjunction with another purchased item.

    - You can Quest for this item - which therefore allows you to gain more experience if paired with normally un-questable Original items!

    - No limit on how many enchantments you can buy for a character.

    - Must be purchased alongside whatever item you wish to enchant, as it can't be used alone.
    • Any/All of your three "free" joining accessories can be enchanted.

    - Aspect of enchantment must be explained in the appropriate profile section for the item.
    • Enchantments can be turned on or off by their characters, but their power cannot be manipulated or controlled.

Interactive: Relic of Tempus -- Priceless
This item cannot be bought! It is a prize resulting from Novus' first IC Contest, the Relic Contest/Shaman Hunt, given out to the winner. This item gives its owner the choice between Immortality or a Time-Related Magic, and is able to be transferred between characters. However, it will only give its current owner any benefit when worn IC'ly, as transferring it causes the abilities to also transfer!

    - The transfer must be done IC'ly, and both the old and new owner must reply to the Restricted Items Update thread.

    - Immortality will cause the character to stop aging physically, as well as provide them the ability (if you choose) to accelerate healing and even evade (most) death.

    - Magic will require staff to approve your specific talents and magic tree before using it.

Interactive: Immortality -- 1,000 Signos
When your character’s immortality is approved by a staff member, it will freeze them at their current age (as determined by the Aging Records). Your character will never physically age past this point.

    - The player may choose to expand immortality to allow their characters to accelerate healing and even "evade (most) death."

    - However the character must have some type of mortal weakness (such as type of wound inflicted, weapon used, etc) or threshold at which they cannot avoid death.

Interactive: Realistic Bonded -- 1,000 Signos
Give your character an animal companion! The companion has to be the size of a horse (21HH) or smaller, and it must be an existing non-humanoid animal in the real-life world. See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.

Interactive: Bonded Pack -- 1,500 Signos
Give your character a pack of small animal companions! The companions have to be the size of a rabbit or smaller, and the pack cannot include more than five companions. See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.

Interactive: Massive Bonded -- Priceless/Non-purchaseable
This item cannot be bought! Give your character an animal companion; it is not limited to size constraints like all other Bondeds are, and can be any creature over 7 feet tall (21HH) or wide — whether real, fantasy, or extinct! See the Bondeds guidebook page for more.

Interactive: Fantasy Bonded -- 2,000 Signos
Give your character an animal companion! It can be any fantasy non-humanoid creature – even one that you make up, as long as you’ve got a visual reference for it! See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.

Interactive: Extinct Bonded -- 2,000 Signos
Give your character an animal companion! It can be any extinct non-humanoid creature, as long as you’ve got a visual reference for it! See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.

Original Items

Once you have purchased and posted in the appropriate Restricted Items Redemption Thread, staff will review and approve your redemption. From there, you are free to begin roleplaying with said item. Questing is not available, unless the Original Item is paired with an Enchantment.

Original: Accessory -- 150 Signos
In addition to the 3 free small (max size of 16in) accessories you are allowed upon joining, you can purchase up to 3 additional accessories from the Agora! They can be any size, so long as they are not a whole outfit or armor!

    - No weapons allowed as accessories.

    - A long scarf will constitute an accessory, but a cloak would constitute an outfit.
Original: Pet -- 200 Signos
Use this item to give your character a common pet! These can be any realistic/common animals that are under 50lbs, as well as urbanized small Novus fauna.

    - Maximum of 3 pets per character.

    - Pets can only be realistic/real life species under 50lbs.

    - Pets cannot talk and do not have any mental connection with characters like bondeds do.

    - Small Novus fauna, such as Denocte's pygmy dragons from the Night Markets, can be purchased as pets!

    - Wild Novus fauna, such as Delumine's Imperial Hounds, cannot be purchased as pets.
Original: Minor Mutation -- 400 Signos
Use this item to give your character a feature that would otherwise be not allowed on Novus! This allows you to replace species-typical face, leg, hoof (such as giving a character an alligator mouth, etc!)! They still must have some overall resemblence to allowed species (e.g. you cannot use a mutation to join a full-on lion). When in doubt, confer with the staff team.

    - Maximum of 3 mutations per character.
Original: Outfit -- 500 Signos
Create an outfit for your character. This can be as small as shoulder shawl or as large as a fullbody hooded cloak with accompanying satchel, potion vials, and coin purses. There are nearly no limits for Outfits - other than they may not include any weapons!
Original: Armor -- 1,000 Signos
Create armor for your character to be used aesthetically or for battle. It can be as simple as a helmet or as complex as a fully assembled outfit, it's all up to you!

    - Armor may include one weapon of any size that is from the Bronze Age or earlier.

    - For large weapons, you must have a reasonably realistic explanation of how your character wields it.
    • Lesser Telekinesis is not strong enough to manipulate large weapons heavier than 5lbs.
Original: Weapon -- 700 Signos
These weapons must be of reasonable size and from the Bronze Age or earlier. Anything heavier than 5lbs cannot be wielded by lesser telekinesis, and you must provide a reasonable explanation of how your character would wield it. Coupled with an armor set, that is a total of up to TWO weapons on your character at any given time. While you may purchase more than one armor set (but cannot have more than 1 on at a time), you cannot purchase more than 1 individual Weapon.

    - Allowed weapons:
    • Anything dating from or before the Bronze Age.
    • Throwing Knives: Max of 3, and cannot be regular daggers.
    • Darts: Max of 5, in addition to the tube itself.
    • Poison cannot be a chemically refined substance, and must be able to be made with natural elements or by very crude refining.

    - Weapons not allowed:
    • Anything dating later than the Bronze Age.
    • Guns (crude or otherwise), cannons, dynamite/TNT, bombs, smoke bombs, grenades, flash bombs, mortars, rockets, etc.

Original: Change Magic -- 700 Signos
This item will allow you to change your character's existing Active Magic. Once purchased, you will need to describe how their new magic develops at all levels (their 'Magic Tree') in the 'Magic' section of your character's profile, and staff will have to approve such before you are able to use it.

    - All Active Magics come with a related Parvus Magic! If you had an existing Parvus Magic, it must also be changed with this item.

    - Simple edits do not require purchase of this item. Major changes, such as switching an element manipulation from Ice to Fire, does.

    - See the Magic guidebook section for more information.
Original: Character Pass -- 2,000 Signos
This pass allows your character to bypass most design restrictions! You can replace hooves with talons, face with alligator maw, etc! Only restriction is the design must still remain distinctly recognizable as equus- or cervidae-esque. Purchase of this pass comes with a FREE passive magic.

    - These passes are for new OR to convert existing characters.
    • If you are converting, staff will create a redemption thread where the transformation is 'explained.'

    - Almost everything goes with these! The main rule: The character has to still be distinctly, recognizably equus- or cervidae-esque. This means no standard dragons, gryphons, or other animals.
    - (1) Passive Magic is automatically included with the Pass, no extra cost.
    • Anything that can be classified as an Active Magic must be purchased separately.
