Restricted Items

Restricted Items

Before we delve deeper into the Restricted Items, we want to explain why we’ve restricted items in the first place. Above all else, we want to encourage interaction and originality on Novus. We have two types of restricted items:

Interactive” items are ones we want to know the story behind. How did your character become immortal or blessed with their magic? “Original” items are ones that we want to regulate to ensure they don’t become too common. For instance, armor should be extremely hard for a hooved animal to create, so it wouldn’t make sense if every other warrior wandering the realm carried a helmet or a chest piece!

Here are the steps you need to take in order to redeem a restricted item:
  • Purchase the item from the Agora.

  • If it’s an original item, simply respond to the correct Restricted Items Redemption thread found here and wait for staff approval.

  • If it’s an interactive item, respond to the Restricted Items Redemption thread. Based on which item you purchased and how you fill out the form, a staff member will create an IC thread for you to respond to. Your response must be 500 words or more. Once you have completed your response, go back to the Restricted Items Redemption thread and let a staff member know.

  • There are no exceptions to this procedure for original items. There are two exceptions to this procedure for interactive items; if a character is born on-site with the item, or if you purchase the item for a new character that you are joining, you do not have to go through these steps!
If we find you role-playing with a restricted item without going through these steps (and you don't qualify for one of the exceptions), you will receive a Tier (1) warning. Simple enough? Great - now we can tell you all about the restricted items up for grabs!

Original Items

Once you have purchased these items and posted in the Restricted Items Redemption Thread, staff will read over your form and the applicable changes to your profile to ensure it meets all requirements. Once approved, your item will be added to your Postbit (if applicable), and recorded on the Records Page. From there, you are free to begin roleplaying with said item - there will be no IC Thread / Random Event created by staff for you to reply to!

Original: Active Magic -- 2,000 Signos
Magic is arguably one of the most sought-after things on Novus, and also one of the hardest to obtain. This item will allow you to choose a magic affinity for your character. Once purchased, you will need to describe how their magic develops at all levels (their 'Magic Tree') in the 'Magic' section of your character's profile, and staff will have to approve such before you are able to use it.

All Active Magics come with a related Parvus Magic! Need ideas? Brainstorm with staff!

Examples of active magic: Being a hippocampus, controlling the weather, weilding an element such as fire.
See the Magic guidebook section for more information.
Original: Passive Magic -- 1,000 Signos
This item will allow you to choose a passive magic affinity for your character. Once purchased, you will need to describe the passive magic in the 'Magic' section of your character's profile, and staff will have to approve the specific elements of your magic.

Examples of passive magic: Glowing eyes or markings, skin that is always cold or hot, moving markings, etc.
See the Magic guidebook section for more information.
Original: Accessory -- 150 Signos
In addition to the 3 free small (max size of 16in) accessories you are allowed upon joining, you can purchase up to 3 additional accessories from the Agora! They can be any size, so long as they are not a whole outfit or armor!

    No weapons allowed as accessories.
A long scarf will constitute an accessory, but a cloak would constitute an outfit.
Original: Enchanted Item -- 400 Signos
Use this item to give your character an accessory that posseses magical properties, such as a lantern whose flame never goes out! Each purchased item corresponds to one enchanted accessory.

There's no limit on how many enchanted items you can buy for a character!
Enchanted items cannot produce a "harmful" effect, such as flames that can burn others.
Enchanted items can be turned on or off by their characters, but their power cannot be manipulated or controlled.
Original: Minor Mutation -- 400 Signos
Use this item to give your character a feature that would otherwise be banned on Novus! Examples include glittery skin or markings, replacing equine features (such as giving a character deer ears, an alligator mouth, etc!), or different colored blood! When in doubt, confer with the staff team!

Maximum of 3 mutations per character.
Mutations cannot produce a "harmful" or magical effect, such as flames that can burn others or poisonous skin.
Anything deemed magical, such as moving markings, flaming body parts, etc will require Passive Magic.
Original: Outfit -- 500 Signos
Create an outfit for your character, including jewelry. This can be as small as earrings and a veil, or as large as a cloak and bangles on each leg. Once purchased and approved, you may change their outfit once every eight real life months – but keep in mind that this item must be purchased again if you’d like to have multiple outfits to interchange between. If you are found changing outfits without permission, your item will be revoked without refund. Please note, outfits may not include any weapons!
Original: Armor -- 1,000 Signos
Create armor for your character. It can be as simple as a helmet or as complex as a fully assembled outfit, we don’t care. Once purchased and approved, you may change their armor set once every eight real life months – but keep in mind that this item must be purchased again if you’d like to have multiple outfits to interchange between. If you are found changing armor sets without permission, your item will be revoked without refund. Please note, armor may include one weapon of any size that is from the Bronze Age or earlier! For large weapons, you must have a reasonably realistic explanation of how your character wields it. Lesser Telekinesis is not strong enough to manipulate large weapons heavier than 5lbs.
Original: Weapon -- 700 Signos
These weapons must be of reasonable size and from the Bronze Age or earlier. Anything heavier than 5lbs cannot be wielded by lesser telekinesis, and you must provide a reasonable explanation of how your character would wield it. Coupled with an armor set, that is a total of up to TWO weapons on your character at any given time. While you may purchase more than one armor set (but cannot have more than 1 on at a time), you cannot purchase more than 1 individual Weapon.

    Allowed weapons:
    - Anything dating from or before the Bronze Age.
    - Throwing Knives: Max of 3, and cannot be regular daggers.
    - Darts: Max of 5, in addition to the tube itself.
    - Poison cannot be a chemically refined substance, and must be able to be made with natural elements or by very crude refining.

    Weapons not allowed:
    - Anything dating later than the Bronze Age.
    - Guns (crude or otherwise), cannons, dynamite/TNT, bombs, smoke bombs, grenades, flash bombs, mortars, rockets, etc.
Original: Character Pass -- 2,000 Signos
Have a character whose mutations can't be explained by magic, or you just want to save your Active magic slot for something else? This is the pass for you! It comes with an included Passive Magic, free of charge.
Original: Relic of Tempus -- Priceless
This item cannot be bought! It is a prize resulting from Novus' first IC Contest, the Relic Contest/Shaman Hunt, given out to the winner. This item gives its owner the choice between Immortality or a Time-Related Magic, and is able to be transferred between characters. However, it will only give its current owner any benefit (must be worn in character to do so, as well), as transferring it causes the Immortality/Magic to also transfer! The transfer must be done IC'ly, and both the old and new owner must reply to the Restricted Items Update thread to notify staff of the change. Immortality will cause the character to stop aging physically. Magic will require staff to approve your specific talents and magic tree before using it.

Interactive Items

Once you have purchased these items and posted in the Restricted Items Redemption Thread, staff will read over your form and the applicable changes to your profile to ensure it meets all requirements. As long as the item itself is approved, staff will then post a Random Event thread for your character to post (1) 500-word response to. Once such is done, your item will be added to your Postbit (if applicable), and recorded on the Records Page. From there, you are free to begin roleplaying with said item!

Interactive: Immortality -- 1,000 Signos
When your character’s immortality is approved by a staff member, it will freeze them at their current age (as determined by the Aging Records). Your character will never physically age past that point, but they can still die from grievous wounds.
Interactive: Realistic Bonded -- 1,000 Signos
Give your character an animal companion! The companion has to be the size of a bear or smaller, and it must be an existing non-humanoid animal in the real-life world. See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.
Interactive: Bonded Pack -- 1,500 Signos
Give your character a pack of small animal companions! The companions have to be the size of a rabbit or smaller, and the pack cannot include more than five companions. See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.
Interactive: Massive Bonded -- 1,500 Signos
Give your character an animal companion! It must be an existing non-humanoid animal in the real-life world, and is not limited to size constraints like the Realistic Bondeds are. See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.
Interactive: Fantasy Bonded -- 2,000 Signos
Give your character an animal companion! It can be any fantasy non-humanoid creature – even one that you make up, as long as you’ve got a visual reference for it! See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.
Interactive: Extinct Bonded -- 2,000 Signos
Give your character an animal companion! It can be any extinct non-humanoid creature, as long as you’ve got a visual reference for it! See the Bondeds guidebook page for more information.

Character Pass

This character was specially made for characters who are "beyond the normal scope of what is allowed on Novus." This includes characters with mutations such as talons for feet, excessive extra appendages, mutations that cannot be explained by a medical condition, etc!

Rules:
  • These passes are for new OR to convert existing characters.

    • If you are converting, staff will create a redemption thread where the transformation is 'explained.'

  • Almost everything goes with these! The main rule: The character has to still be distinctly, recognizably equine.

    • This means no standard dragons, gryphons, or other animals.

    • Mutations are allowed, and they don't need to be explained by a medical condition.

    • (1) Passive Magic is automatically included with the Pass, no extra cost.

    • Anything that can be classified as an Active Magic must be purchased separately.
Distribution: These passes will be controlled and a limited amount sold every season by staff members. To avoid it becoming a "first come first serve" scramble, they will be distributed on the following dates with the following rules:

  • The distribution date: 12:00PM (Noon) EST on the first Thursday of every season.

  • The pass will cost 2,000 signos each.

  • Only 5 total passes will be distributed per round, with only 1 pass allowed per member.

  • The first (3) passes will be first come first serve to whomever fills out the form on the application thread. You must have the signos at the time of posting your application.

  • If you are a claim a pass, you must create or convert the character within (4) weeks of winning.

    • If you do not, your signos will be returned and another winner will be chosen.

  • The final (2) passes will be 'reserves'. After the first three passes have been claimed, anyone who applied for the previous round will be eligible to participate in the raffle for the last two.

    • You must post your form again with a link to your last application.

    • If you do not post in the new thread, you won't be eligible for the raffle.

    • If you do not include a link to your previous application, you won't be eligible for the raffle.

    • Each form will be given a number and be entered into a raffle to win the last two reserve slots.

    • The winning numbers will be drawn by a True Random Number RNG roll.

  • If you are a raffle winner, you must create or convert the character within (4) weeks of winning.

    • If you do not, your signos will be returned and another winner will be chosen.
