and all their words for glory

well they always sounded empty
With the setting of the sun came a welcome reprieve to its relentless heat. Of course, the interior side of the Court’s citadel could provide just that, as could the heavy tree line that bordered Delumine. But for a warrior such as Ulric, such areas did not provide an unobstructed view of his surroundings. As a warrior to the Dawn, it was his duty to keep a vigilant eye out for any telltale signs of trouble so that he could put a swift end to it, or if he were unable, do everything in his power to protect its denizens and get them out of harm’s way.

But as the setting sun cast a brilliant display of reds, purples and pinks across the cerulean sky above, Ulric knew that the last bit of sunlight would soon perish and douse the land in darkness, save for the dim light of the waning moon. Though his time in Novus had thus been short, it seemed a peaceful place to call home, but the roan knew better than to believe that peace could be everlasting. Trouble had always seemed to follow him no matter where he wandered, and it would only be luck that it didn’t come traipsing after him here. For the sake of Delumine alone, he prayed that it did not.

Having found an outcropping of rocks, it was there that Ulric sought to post himself up for the duration of night. Unfurling his wings partially from his sides, he used them to aid in keeping himself balanced as he ventured up the height of it. From there, he would be able to get the best view possible across the expanse of flatlands, and with the citadel settled within view behind him, he would be able to act at once should anything arise.

It would be a long and lonely night with only the stars as his company, but hopefully it would be a serene one – at least it would mean he was tending to his duties as he ought to be.

Kasil
It had been quite the day of touring. Such things often left Kasil mentally drained, the various interactions of the day like an endless cycle of chatter spiraling in his mind. He had a difficult time letting things go, and most of the day would stay with him for the weeks to come. He moved stiffly, his body full of aches that he had never quite acknowledged before this point. It seemed that travelling so much after a long time stuffed away in the citadel had made him soft; his muscles working to remember the days of hard travelling and labor that he had done just a mere year ago.

The long grasses of the meadow grew up on either side of him, a path worn through the fields thanks in part to more frequent travelers. The sun was beginning to set, passing from Solis’ hands to that Vespera’s. She would deliver it safely to the earth until it was time for Oriens to take it up again. On and on this cycle went, and with each passing day the world became less afraid of another endless night. It was a movement on this otherwise quiet plain that caused Kasil to look up from his musings -- a figure in the distance climbing up onto what appeared to be a small outcropping of rocks. He frowned. It was nearly night, and the court lacked sufficient warriors to protect them all at the current moment -- so it was not safe to sleep out beyond the citadel’s walls.

It was this thought that found the Sovereign wading through the high grass, it rustling around him like a restless ocean of green, until he came up towards the outcropping. He could see now that it was a stallion, one like himself with a pair of wings meant to carry him into the air. Except...to Kasil’s horror, one of them was not whole. Taking a moment to steady himself, Kasil had to tilt his head up to speak. ”Excuse me!” He said, louder than he had intended. ”But it is not safe to sleep beyond the citadel. I’ve come to escort you back into the city where it is safer.”

Something breaches the tranquil silence of the meadow, and immediately Ulric’s eyes scan the area for the source. It doesn’t take him long to spot the culprit, for whoever it was making their way towards him was making no small effort to mask his approach. Still, the roan’s ears tick back a degree and his muscles tense automatically, ready to spring into action if the need arose.

But in all his years serving as protector, he can recall only one or two occasions where anyone had come forward so boldly, so doltishly with the intent to harm.

The warrior remains on full alert and begins to move from his position, stepping halfway down the outcropping but never allowing his circumspect gaze to fall away from the form of the stranger. However, as he opens his mouth to demand identification, the roan is beaten to the punch and what this winged man says leaves him stupefied. He has come to escort him back to the citadel? The statement leaves Ulric in a brief state of bewilderment, for that was certainly something he hadn’t been expecting.

Slowly, the tension in his muscles begins to ebb away and he steps further down from the rocks, this time keeping his wings tucked securely against his sides as he does so. A warm, almost amused chuckle rattles his barrel as it leaves his throat and he shakes his head. “I’m afraid you might have me confused,” he speaks up then as he truly focuses on the one standing beneath him. It’s another stallion, of that he is certain, and carries two magnificent wings upon his back. Like Ulric himself, he, too, has his mane pulled back away from his face, revealing a golden crown of sorts that sits atop a striking blaze that runs the length of his face. By his words alone does Ulric surmise he is no intruder but a denizen of the Dawn Court as well, although he can’t say he’s ever seen the bay about previously.

“I don’t need escorted back to the citadel. I’m just taking up my post for the night, as is my duty as a warrior here.” He pauses then, his following words tinged with little more than dutiful concern and curiosity. “My name is Ulric; I assume you serve the Dawn as well?” He must, considering how ready he was to haul his ass back to the citadel before night settled in completely.

DON'T STOP, DON'T STOP BELIEVING
IN TRUTH, IN GRACE, AND IN GRIEVING

As Kasil had drawn closer, it was easier to see the brilliant striping of the stallion's feathers -- a stark contrast to the plain brown of his own. How mesmerizing! He had stopped just close enough to be heard, although he was ready for anything. His advisors were making a push for him to take on a couple of warriors as a protection detail, but Kasil had little fear of others. He was very personable, and yet he was was certain that he could hold his own in a fight though his experiences were far fewer than most. Those born in Dawn Court tended to think their way around fights, reaching compromise rather than engage in battle -- though it seemed more and more that reasoning and thought were not going to suffice forever.

A chuckle reached his ears, causing the sovereign to tilt his head in curiosity. His dark gaze watched as the roan stallion began to descend the rocks, but Kasil would not be deterred just yet. He was responsible for the safety of all of his citizens, and that included anyone within his domain. His ear flicks a degree in the stallion's direction, as the words began to flow from dark lips. Ah, one of the warriors! Only mildly embarrassed, Kasil let a smile break free onto his lips -- his eyes alight with curiosity and amusement as it seemed that the stallion didn't recognize him either. He had only met one other warrior before this, but it was wonderful to see that the ranks were increasing!

"Forgive me." He said, giving a tip of his head. "We are very fortunate to have such brave warriors amongst us, Ulric. I thank you for your service." And yet, Kasil was not going to let him stay out here, warrior or not. "But I think your talents would be of far greater use inside of the citadel, where the citizens sleep. You could patrol the walls, or even within, if you liked." He said cheerily. "Well...yes, I serve the court. I am Kasil, Sovereign to Delumine. I was just returning from a long day of traveling the borders. I could use an escort back to the citadel." He said lightly, raising an eyebrow.

ULRIC
Ulric regards the man with a critical eye as he listens. Perhaps moving closer to the Citadel would be wiser so that he may alert the others should something happen, but patrolling from within the walls of the stony building? “I’m afraid I don’t understand,” he admits after a moment, dark lips pursing together with thought, “Staying inside would only hinder my ability to keep watch over the land. Should it fall under attack, we wouldn’t know until the danger was at our doorstep.” Quite literally, and that certainly wouldn’t bode well for anyone trapped inside during an attack.

His presumption had been correct, however; this man of sooty brown held allegiance with the Dawn Court, but in a much higher degree than Ulric did himself. He was no commoner, this stranger of the night, but the Sovereign of the Court, of all things. For a moment, the roan looks absolutely mortified, his mouth falling open as he fumbles for a response. He knows little of his Sovereign, just a snippet or two from Somnus, and so fears for having upset him and thus making a bad first impression to his superior – yet at the same time, Ulric stands by his statement all the same.

Dipping his head with respect, the warrior finds his voice. “An honor to finally meet you, Sir,” he greets before lifting his head once more and focusing his golden eyes on Kasil’s similarly hued ones. “My apologies for coming off too blunt. I only wish to see everyone safe for all their days. If it’s an escort back to the citadel that you need, I would be pleased to accompany you the rest of the way.”

DON'T STOP, DON'T STOP BELIEVING
IN TRUTH, IN GRACE, AND IN GRIEVING

Kasil hesitated, but gave a gentle nod in agreement. He could see the argument, certainly -- and he had never been a tactician himself, yet he did not like for his people to be alone. One stallion, no matter how great his prowess was no match against multiple dangers. The stallion pursed his lips slightly, considering himself and the slate-colored stallion with a thoughtful gaze. ”I’ll admit I know very little about strategy,” Kasil began, his ears falling back against his head. ”But perhaps it would be better if there were more of you? A pair, to watch out for each other.” He frowned down at his hooves, his brows furrowing atop his eyes. ”Yet, Dawn has never really been known for their warriors and since the overthrowing...things have been quite strained.”

The king gave a snort, determined to find some incentive to bring the warrior ranks back up to par with the rest of the court. They needed protection, and soon -- as the other courts began to get their feet under them, Kasil worried that Dawn was becoming weak and susceptible to attack. Tensions were already running high, especially as Day Court was proving to be quite aggressive in their pursuit of militant perfection beneath the new Sovereign...that Maxence fellow. Kasil’s eyes flick upward again, the gentle brown of his gaze catching the warrior in a state of shock after Kasil had revealed his identity. He could not help the little tip of his lips that curled upward as yet another underestimated him. It was something that Kasil liked best, though it had bothered him at first. He liked that he wasn’t well recognized in the Court, able to blend in with his people and hear their true needs and desires.

The winged stallion holds his place as the roan before him dips his head in respect, the smile widening as the stallion’s demeanor changed. ”Nothing to be sorry for, Ulric.” He said, shifting his weight so to rest more comfortably. ”The honor is mine. You are much needed in these times of uncertainty, warrior. Please, accept my deepest thanks on behalf of the citizens of Delumine.” The night was beginning to settle upon the land, and Kasil glanced towards the citadel as the lights began to shine like beacons to him. ”I would appreciate your escort, and perhaps you can tell me more about what it is like to be a warrior. My ranks are unfilled, and I need to hear from the people just what we need to do in order to keep everyone here safe.”

The bay turned then, not quite giving the stranger his back -- and waited for him to come down from the outcropping of rock. It was still quite a ways to the city, and he was sure that there was much to discuss.
