the foxes are never far
The sun was just starting to paint the day with the vibrant colors, orange light bringing fire to the changing hues of autumn. Leaves seemed to glow with fire as they soaked in the morning glow, the sky dancing with pinks and purples and golds. It was crisp and cool, but beginning to be the perfect fall day.
The trees were alive with chattering squirrels and calling birds, each animal going about their plan as if nothing in the world would distract them. The animals that needed to gather supplies for the cold were working hard to bulk out their stores, trying to make certain that they had enough to last through the winter without starving. In the clearing, foxes searched for a meal, listening and pouncing like dolphins in the sea.
Hidden in the sea of grass, a small puppy stays perfectly still. He was injured by one of the hunting foxes and managed to escape. The bleeding was staining his pure, snowy pelt with crimson, cooling his temperature as the moisture from his wound evaporated. Just out of reach, a small stream meandered through. The sound of the water moving was torture for the poor animal, his amber eyes never leaving the life giving fluid that tempted him to move. That pulled to the small creature in an attempt to break through his shock.
The cloud hued pup hunched deeper into the grass, trying to retain some of his body heat. He was starting to shiver, the cool ground sucking away his warmth as he panted silently due to the pain of his injury. The sound of steps made him flinch, a whimper escaping without thought as he moved his rear leg slightly. The sound was nearly inaudible, muffled by the blades of grass around him.
