There was no word for heaven nor for earth, the time of day given not a single thought as the black and gold sails of our protagonist fell below the last star. Above was the universe; a speckled domain of unnamed gods and monsters and below, a carpet of peach-coloured clouds lit only by the sun sinking in the west. It was this high territory that night became day, the stars fell away, and Damascus of the dungeons would last touch moon tide.

Like a burned leaf scattered upon the wind, Damascus begins his story above these clouds in the fragile realm between heaven and earth, tired wings flaying with a BOOM among the wind to break his fall. "OOF!" the stag had bellowed, a quadruple of legs swinging and dangling tiredly under his heaving ribs. He was alive. He was free. Bricks, iron, and chains were behind an entire veil of planets; that old life and what once was was now literally a world way. Dohv, who had frightfully tangled himself tightly within the blackbird's feathers finally peaked his long-eared head out, tiny paws clasping onto the shaft of a feather for some extra security.

"We made it!" the jerboa had spoken through their bond, wide eyes cast downwards at the unravelling landscape.
Just a glimpse of the ocean below was enough to cause the child to gasp, raking in a heavy breath through his mouth while his front feet widened atop a cloud in a failed attempt to stand upon it. Wingbeats lifting him from the false floor, Damascus craned his head low in an attempt to steal yet another glimpse of the world beneath. There were oceans on this globe too it would seem and, just as the gulls sounded their fanfare from the pine and cliffs below, an entire landscape fell beneath the retreating puffs of cloud. Golden cliffs warmed by a dusk sun, a towering structure on the furthest point of the coast. A truly beautiful place.

It was a warm breeze and the drumming of waves upon the shoreline that greeted the slave to solitude, to safety, to the cornucopia. Wingbeats of a free man echoed over the last of that rosy cloud top, his black, tired sails flattening as he aimed his flight townwards to the lush cliffside fields now appearing within his view. What kind of creatures would inhabit this land? Any pegasi? Any equine folk at all?

Hopeful as ever Damascus touched upon the ground with a huff and grunt stemming from an exhausted body and mind, his limbs nearly buckling completely under his hefty weight. The length of his tail was soon to fall beside him, the heavy appendage dragging along the tired form of the lad as he set off upon the cliff in search of life.

YAY!
My first ever Damascus post. I feel like this was utter horseshit but we'll get there.
Open to ANYONE!

Truth be had, he had not expected to make it to the cliff tops, not truly; he had been warned that he was too young, too soft, and rightfully so. He had had very little room thus far to accomplish things on his own, always seeming to find himself in need of assistance before making it very far. The desert, the shrines, the sicknesses- it would seem his own body was trying to reject the very thing which he craved, his independence.

And still, Ipomoea's determination had seemed to outweigh the odds, tipping them just so slightly in his favor for once.

But Ipomoea didn’t allow himself to dwell on the fact of his accomplishment, not for long: there was a world to be seen, starting here and now at the height of Terrastella. The sun was golden, the wind tugged at his hair and the ocean crashed hundreds of feet below him. The salt from the ocean hung heavily in the air, so abundandtly that Po could smell it, taste it, he could feel its spray upon his face, waking his senses as though they had been hiding within a deep slumber without his even knowing it. Everything felt heightened; as if he were soaring without needing to leave the ground. The endless ocean, so far below him yet eye level on the horizon--it was breathtaking, intriguing: did they meet together there, the sea and sky, melding into each other to become one? Or did they have no end, continuing on forever in a race to get—to where? Maybe, just maybe, one day he would understand.

He had come here for a reason, and it wasn't the sea. A flower hid here, dear to him in that it shared his name, yet it hid from him, its (almost) brother. He hoped to find it before nightfall, when its bloom would start.

But all that he found instead was a shadow.

It descended rather rapidly, striking the ground at a speed he hadn’t imagined sustainable—or was his mind simply playing tricks on him now? For the shadow seemed to solidify, take form, move on its own without any definitive thing there to cast it. How could it be its own creator..?

There was a moment of hesitation, a heartbeat skipped. And then Ipomoea was moving, the flower and coastline forgotten, consumed by this new mystery that had planted itself so nicely in front of him, a gift just waiting to be unwrapped, potential dangers be damned! He followed the shadow, and the songbird followed him, wings matching legs beat for beat, stride for stride, faster and faster so that he might bring himself close enough to see that the moving shadow—

Was actually a horse?

A goliath of a horse maybe, with something huge and long trailing after him, seemingly consuming him, but still a horse. It was too late to stop now, for surely if he could see this other figure surely he was not hidden, either. So he continued forward, albeit much more slowly and collected now, as if Po thought he should be embarrassed of his over-excitement from just a moment ago.

“Hi there? I don’t suppose you’ve seen any flowers up here? Or well, flower buds, they shouldn’t have bloomed yet, not for at least-“ a pause here, to scrutinize the position of the sun, “another hour maybe, I guess."

Back to the important matters.

Damascus's trek begun slow and steady, his eyes remaining a token of true bewilderment as his heavy limbs trudged their way up to the heights of the sea cliffs. The colours to fill his gaze and paint the picture before him had the blackened creature close to tears, his overwhelmed and rickety form spilling slowly up the pommel of a slope in order to reach the tallest point of the natural wonder. The pegasi's pace, though, remained almost non-existant. He was enchanted, enamoured, and completely beyond comprehension of the world he had found himself a part of.

Dohv was soon to scamper to the lad's poll, taking a hold of the blackened boy's ear as he stood perpendicular to the departing sun, coat awash with a golden blanket. The jerboa too was quite speechless, his two round eyes soaking in every detail of the landscape. Who was responsible for such an earth? Which god's domain was this? The flood of questions came next, and Damascus found himself shaking his nose in disbelief ever-so-slightly. This had to be a dream.

"Hi there?-"
Though the voice was calm and quizzical, the dark child still spooked under the weight of his feathers which out of instinct had threatened to take flight. Turning upon his forehand, spinning to meet the gentleman face-to-face, Damascus listened intently but also quite blankly as the colourful man asked him of flowers and something about them blooming. The colt knew little about flowers, he'd never really seen any before, but a smile had found it's way to his face regardless - really, he was just quite overjoyed to see another equine.
"Hallo, Damascus is I" the lad would begin, bobbing his head as he spoke "Flower I seen no, but help you I can"

Despite his exhausted eyes and weakened bones, the boy had found an impeccable amount of energy just from the excitement induced from seeing another of his kind. Without another words the stag brushed past the one in search of flowers, Dohv looking keenly toward the bird that accompanied him.
The flower-searcher's apprentice slunk across the cliff top, his head hung low as he looked for... well, he didnt know, but he was sure to hoot if a flower came his way. Though there was something else that whispered across the breeze, the cliffs, and prompted him to search for something far greater than a flower.
"Arrive me from the sky" he told his new friend, a glance cast upward at the star-streaked canopy. "Fall fall, down down, until here land I".

He was oblivious to the effect his presence had on the darkened stranger; he was far too busy getting a closer look at him. The blackness seemed to stretch out endlessly, from the muzzle rising several inches above his own, down his body and into the tail that seemed as if it would never end. It swallowed in the light, ensnaring it so that he simply appeared as what Ipomoea had first mistaken him for: a single, three-dimensional shadow. One with the ability to move and breathe and talk, albeit brokenly. Only the bits of gold layering his topmost feathers seemed to break the spell, glistening brightly against his otherwise muted hide.

It was his voice which caused Ipomoea to realize he was staring, pulling his attention away from the vast expanse of hair and back to this Damascus’ face, zeroing in on the gold protruding at the end. He wondered if it had been his own choice to pinch and puncture the skin; were there people who did so willingly? He wasn’t sure. He certainly did not remember consenting to his.

”Damascus,” he tested the name, rolling it slowly off his tongue as though saying it aloud might settle it into his memory, liking the sound of it. It made him wish to show off his own, hoping it could compare. ”I’m Ipomoea!”

Flower I seen no, but help you I can. His disappointment came and went in an instant, a brief flash eclipsed instantly by the offer. Po was accustomed to help, expected it even; he wasn’t going to begin turning it down now, especially knowing he had made it here on his own. That feat was enough of an accomplishment for him, and the more pairs of eyes to look the faster the search might be. ”It’s supposed to be really beautiful, it blooms at night,” he insisted, a sense of urgency in his tone promising the search would be well worth the effort.

Damascus’ excitement seemed contagious, his addition spurring Po’s search on. He followed him eagerly, being sure to keep a spare length between the two in order to cover more ground. His spotted head swung back and forth in no particular pattern, cerise eyes scanning the cliff top as quickly as he dared, lest he miss the small green buds from which the blue-centered petals would unfurl. But only a moment later, he found his attention was quickly shifted once again to his new helper in astonishment.

”You fell? From way up there? How, why? How far?” He couldn’t stop the hoard of questions, not bothering to think they might be too invasive or insensitive. A glance was given to the sky, noticing as if the first time just how vast it was. The possibility that it might go on forever alongside the ocean seemed far more plausible.
