”Do we actually know how to fight them?” Solis smiles back at the stallion with a wild grin, the enthusiasm clear as day in his eyes. “Why, you use the weapons Tempus gave you!”
As the Court begins to disperse - off to do whatever it is they do best, he is sure - Solis leans his head close to Seraphina to listen. For a moment his facade seems to disappear, and something almost-serious seems to come through. “Oh, my dear Sovereign, don’t you know?” he murmurs, lifting his legs into a trot. “I have always watched over the Day Court.”
From the corner of his eye he contemplates the Warden, tossing his head as if to say ”follow me, won’t you?” “Since when were you one for caution?” he asks, and it seems there is a taunting edge to his voice. “Nonetheless, you might have a point after all…” His pace continues to increase, until he is rushing headlong down the snow-covered dunes, following Torstein’s lead.
And as they come upon the herd, his voice raises to call out to the group of warriors: “Surround them! We’ll drive them out of the desert!”
The elk, sensing their presence, begin to mill about restlessly, pressing their bodies against one another. Clouds gather above them, endless snow flurries drifting back down to the desert. The greater their agitation, the more powerful the storm grows, until it seems the herd is about ready to stampede and flood the earth in snow along the way. As Torstein takes a side, Solis takes the other, and beckons for the Court to fill in the gaps.
The herd responds in kind, kicking their heels at the incoming equines and even daring to charge one or two. They are bigger than the equines, but they lack their speed: they are slow and clumsy, and Solis himself finds them easy to dodge. But the god has another trick up his sleeve: his frame is positively glowing with light, bright enough to blind the elk and cause further confusion. He rushes back and forth, left then right then left again, keeping the elk turned away from himself - but more importantly, away from his mortal charges.
And soon, the herd begins to move. One breaks and the rest follow, fleeing from the attacking equines. Solis presses the charge, determined to follow until they were well away from the Day Court.
He didn’t have to look back to know the others were doing the same. All they had to do now was flank them to drive them in a single direction.
