no guts, no glory—no legend, no story
Charlie turns to follow Aspara and get her first good look at the secret behind the (no longer) locked door. She thinks that she recognizes a few of the plants, from the swamps in Terrastella, and wondered if whoever this garden had belonged to was some sort of a plant collector. Most of the flora is foreign to her, however.

The extent at which everything is overgrown tells her this place has been forgotten about for a long time now. And the vines growing up the walls are so full and thick it’s almost impossible to hear any sound from outside the garden. It’s almost like the pair of fillies has entered another world. Part of her wonders what it used to look like, before. But the way it is now makes it seem more mystical. And also a little eerie.

Charlie wanders closer to the pool and the tree, whose branches and blooms tickle her spine. “I wonder if,” she almost says your mom would know, but under the circumstances decides not to. Even if Isra would know, Apsara can’t ask her, “Anyone in the court would know,” the pegasus girl finishes instead. Surely there must be some record of this place, somewhere.

It almost sees better to keep the mystery.

The roan filly glances at her friend when she asks where the equine went who likely used to manage this garden. The most logical answer is they either abandoned it or died, but truthfully neither answer is satisfying. Not when she looks around and tries to imagine this place through Aspara’s eyes. Not when she herself used to refuse to sleep at night without first hearing a fantastical story.

“I bet they were a time mage, with a true love of plants. They used their magic to keep all the flowers at perfect bloom, all the vines super green.” Charlie tries to imagine someone who loved this place so much they kept it in a time loop to preserve it all year round. “Maybe they accidentally opened a tear, and disappeared. The entire court spent months looking for them, but there was no sign of their disappearance.”

She stops in the middle of the garden and watches Aspara nose the vines away from the overgrown statue. “They left everything the way it was to honor them, but forgot about it,” nobody ever came back to tend to the garden, regardless of who this place used to belong to or what the real story was behind it. Hers was a good one, but certainly not true.
