it's our world they can never have it

She rests beneath the surface of the ocean, with only her dorsal fin breaking the surface -- absorbing the warmth of the sun in the lazy afternoon air, her forelegs stretched out along the shallow muck, her body submerged in water just deep enough to hide her. There was no need to lift her head above the water for oxygen, this strange body of hers adapting whenever she found herself submerged, and so she simply lazed beneath the water as the waves gently pushed her back and forth.

Eventually, however, she grew bored with simply dozing, and with a quick stretch she had propelled herself into deeper water, although she was careful not to go too deep where the larger predators could be found. Instead, she headed for Denocte’s ports, dodging around the boats there until she reached a pier low enough that she could pop her head up and, with a little effort, managed to hook her hooves over the side so she could pull herself up to look at the boardwalk -- and instantly found herself looking towards a pale, gorgeous unicorn who looked like she should have the attention of the entire boardwalk on her.

“Psst -- hey, gorgeous!”

Mesnyi
Oh my, you’re a beauty, you’re a flag, you’re a sail
If I never left you this little coffin have’d no nail

esnyi decided that she liked Denocte, and for now, she would stay. It was sort of nice, in a way, how this Novus was set up. She could wander great distances and still return “home,” as a citizen might put it (though it would never be her home) without much consequence. So she thought, anyway. She hadn’t been back to Dawn, and now there were festivities going on and if anybody thought Mesnyi would miss that…well. They simply didn’t know her.

Mesnyi had retired to the waters, hoping to enjoy some quiet and perhaps a nap before returning to the hustle and bustle.

”Psst — hey, gorgeous!”

She paused. Of course. Mesnyi put on a wavering grin and looked towards the sound.

Oh.

A fish…woman.

Hmm.

She was not exactly the picture of a siren myth, and yet…Mesnyi was fascinated by her form.

”Hello,” she said. ”Might you be a siren?”

"You see, women are like fires, like flames. Some women are like candles, bright and friendly. Some are like single sparks, or embers, like fireflies for chasing on summer nights. Some are like campfires, all light and heat for a night and willing to be left after. Some women are like hearthfires, not much to look at but underneath they are all warm red coal that burns a long, long while."
