the divine beasts
"It will stop your breath, how cruel I can be."

As the others push forward Veer only pulls back from the lagging elk and watches it collapse into the snow. Around it other elk scatter like mice as the herd starts to turn and flee from the horses nipping at their heels like hunting hounds. He watches them circle and blaze and makes no effort to join them.

He is no dog to nip at the hocks of cows.

Veer shakes the snow and frost from his wings, watching almost too casually as bits of black ink dry and flake away with the ice. His eyes hardly linger on the death shiver of the elk's ribs. He barely tastes the blood on his lips when he licks them just to discover what winter really tastes like. Like iron, he thinks it tastes like metal and copper and sugar.

Somewhere in that channel between them, Najjad rouses from his bed of silk and bones back at the capital and retorts (like a cat, he always needs the last word). You already knew that fool. All the world tastes like blood and metal to you. And because Najjad is not wrong Veer says nothing back as he rises back on his wings and slams his hooves down, crushing the poor elk's head and sparing it any more suffering.

Even cruel creatures can feel pity.

Still he makes no efforts to join the others and their God in chasing the herd out of the desert. He only takes flight, feeling all his wounds for the first time. Drops of blood fall from him like snowflakes as he trails behind the pack and their prey.

As he flies lazily behind them all he cannot help but think that it's a mistake to leave a herd that could kill them in snow and ice alive. Of course, he reminds himself, they could be chasing them towards their death (and that he supposes, would inspire him to join their fray once more). But for now he only watches, a sly smile arcing across his teeth so that he might remind himself not to grimace with pain.

FLYING MIND AND SPLITTING FLANK

A few mouthed off to Toro - Seraphina being the only to offer much help - and Toro was already galloping forward as the sun-god bellowed his commands. Toro’s horns were mere twigs compared to the creatures’ antlers, so he breathed an inner sigh of relief when he found out he wouldn’t have to fight. Deep down, Toro knew who would win.

(For the sharpness of his horns could only go so far.)

The white stallion flanked the herd, charging and kicking whenever one strayed too far; he missed a few hooves to the head himself. The herd moving so cooperatively eased him (as eased as it could, with the snow and flying hooves), as he wasn’t too sure how well his wounded flank would hold up if this continued.

It seems to Solis that driving the herd takes the better part of the day, the sun beginning its decent down to the western horizon - but his impatient nature only adds to the subjectiveness of it. Has it really only been a few hours? he finds himself thinking with an irritated toss of his head. It feels more like days!

Slowly but surely, with a few runaway or stubborn elk to hinder the process, the Day Court reaches the plains outside the border of their Court.

At that point the herd breaks, scattering off in different directions. Solis pulls back, his sliding to a stop with a snort. The god hardly seems fazed, his breathing light and even, which is more than can be said for the rest of the company.

Then, he starts to laugh.

“Look at them run!” he chortles, practically prancing in joy. “It already feels warmer without them!”

The god can hardly find it in him to care where the beasts wander now, so long as they don’t make their way to his Court. In fact, he feels fairly confident that Tempus will be the one to collect his little creations once more, no doubt saving them for the next time he’d like to play referee on Novus.

In the end it is nothing - no great adventure as she had imagined that morning, with her heart in her teeth.

Oh, there was magic enough, with Solis at their front and the frost billowing from the mouths of the monstrous elk. But if these were the kinds of battles that had always been fought, Elif thought the bards had embellished them more colorfully than any of the tapestries that hung in the city.

Surround them, their god of blazing summer sun, of fire and pride, said - and with a few beats of her wings Elif drew back, watching the horses on the ground obey the orders. To simply drive them away seemed strange - what if they went to another of the courts? But Elif is not one to disobey her patron god, and so she drives at the elk from the air, beating her wings and breathing her magic, sending the wind pushing behind them, urging them on.

It works; by the time Solis stops there is a sheen of sweat across Elif’s withers, despite the descent of the sun. At last she lands, flicking her wings and tucking them to her sides. Only then does she glance around and find that the black pegasus is gone - but she is too weary to even curse beneath her breath.

Slowly she joins the others, her spring-bright gaze slipping between her god and her queen, waiting to see if there are any more orders or explanations, and return to Solterra in victory.

Solis' reply only gained a roll of his eyes and an exasperated sigh from his lips. Of course the golden god would find this all to be a fun game...

And so they set off, teeth biting at heels and haunches like petty dogs working on their owners' ranch. The elk were, surprisingly, fairly easy to herd whichever way. After the first initial push to get them moving, just the Solterran's presence was enough to keep the entire herd running... albeit if one of them strayed too close, they might receive a nasty kick from one of the spooked elk. Torstein dodged several kicks, one grazing the upper side of his haunches in what he was certain would reveal a nasty scrape and leave a bruise.

But the closest call was when the one elk that @Veer thought to attack finally succumbed... toppling over from exhaustion and the final rattle of death taking it. It had been lodged on the outskirts of the herd as Veer had attacked it, and when it fell... it fell right in Torstein's path.

A sharp, loud curse tore from his lips, and he veered sharply right — nearly losing his footing — as his haunches coiled to vault him over whatever other part of the elk still lay in his path. He barely cleared.

"Fuck you!" came the roar that ripped from his throat as he shot a hate-filled stare at the ignorant pegasus. "Learn to watch what the fuck you're doing!" he seethed loudly as the pegasus descended back up into the clouds, choosing no longer to help after he claimed his one kill and blood. Piece of shit.

It only takes one time to make an impression. Veer better never hope that he needed to be in Torstein's good graces.

Not long after, the elk were out of the Mors and out of Solterra's hair. The Titan dug his heels in and skidded to a stop, his chest heaving and pelt slick with damp sweat. Ears pinned as Solis had the nerve to laugh, not feeling any bit of exhaustion as his mortal subjects would...

It already feels warmer! elicited a sharp snort from his nostrils. "That's because we're all sweating from having to run across the damn desert," he growled lowly, in between taking a few minutes to catch his breath.
