She charges forward, her bones having hardened as well as her teeth. She does not have her armor with her, not having anticipated a fight to the death. But Katniss will not give up. She will not surrender herself to the beast. After all, she has so much to fight for. She has Isra, Kibou, and all of Night Court. She must fight and she must win.
So when she makes it up to the beast, she tears away at the skin upon its neck at others attack its face. She uses her hardened teeth to rip at the skin, pulling it away layer by layer. But it is almost as though she never fully makes it through the scares and underlying tissues. Instead, she finds herself swallowed in darkness. She can hear the screams of the others and she has to admit, she is scared to. Scared that she has let her family and her court down. But Katniss does not give up. She is a warrior and warriors never give in to weakness.
Light begins to pierce the darkness and Katniss can make out the bridge that leads to the island. No! She did not come here only to be transported back to the start. She would not give up, she couldn’t. And so, with every ounce of strength left in her, Katniss turns her back to the light and once more trudges through the darkness, ripping and pulling at it in the hopes to break free back to where the others are still fighting the beast. But even if all hope is lost, Katniss will never give up.
But in the end, the darkness only dissipates and she is left on the beaches of the island, the bridge just in front of her. She sinks into the sand, devastated and defeated. She has let her court down. She is unworthy of being champion.
