The rocks begin to move, and so does Only, but she is concentrating so hard on freeing him that she doesn’t see it. Only after the rocks are moved and her friend is sliding again does she look up and realize her mistake. One of her oldest friends is moving closer and closer to the tumbling rock and ice, and as she steps closer to him, hears him yell to stay back. As if to punctuate the point, the earth beneath her shifts and grumbles. She watches through her button eyes as he tumbles, in slow motion, out of sight. She wishes to rush to him, but could feel that he was gone – her oldest friend…gone. What would she do now, without him? She could not hide the guilt she felt – it was her fault for moving the stones, her fault for allowing him to fall. All she could do was turn and carefully make her way down the mountain, drowning in her emotions. ”Speech” |
