When their goddess was fully revealed, standing before them in bathed in gold, violet and indigo, Fiona does not know what to think. The gophers are happy, happily munching away on the food reserves Asterion had beckoned to be brought forth for them. Their food, or their court? Without food, some would starve, grow weak or weaker still, but the destruction of their home would leave many without shelter, without a place to warm themselves and rest properly. But oh, which sacrifice would cost them more?

Fiona listened to Vespera speak, listened to the frustration coloring her voice, and she could not believe the words that she was hearing. It was clear to her that the others, too, were struggling with this revelation. Asterion, stood bravely before them, addressed them one last time before he turned and walked away, and for all the softness in his voice she could not help but think that he, perhaps of them all, suffered the most for his court. Then Theodosia, the brave Halcyon cadet, who chided, accused even, the goddess for her actions. Death, loss, how much of it had they experienced these troubling days?

The lavender and ivory girl thought of her home, wondered what state it was in. She heard again the sound of breaking glass, of fire crackling as it swallowed up whatever it touched. Her side stung as she remembered, where the glass had sliced deeply into her barrel as she broke through the window in order to escape. Fiona felt overwhelmed, and her fevered skin only grew warmer at the heightened beating of her heart. She stumbled, shivered, and stepped into @Atreus as her legs nearly gave out beneath her. Her only thought was that she needed to lie down before they gave up on her completely. So she started to move away from Vespera, one slow step at a time.

Israfel

Israfel is reminded, once again, of the cruelty and pathetic irony that comes with the minds of Gods and Goddesses. They are selfish, cruel creatures, manipulative and so eager to start a war between their worshippers, cast asunder and within chaos, undirected, like pieces upon a chess board. It made her sick, and watching as Vespera finally grew a pair and revealed herself to them, to her own fucking Court, standing there bathed in the colors of Dusk in a form that should have been beautiful, the Daughter of the Sun finally broke her silence.

“There is only one God to me,” she began lowly, letting her anger and ire shine through in guttural words, the bite of her tone scathing and scalding, as hot as the flames that burned within her very blood and the fires that crested upon Solaris’ still simmering frame. Ivory ears tipped back, vermillion eyes nearly glowed with precarious anger, and her lips, rose-kissed, were pulled back in an unattractive mixture between a grimace and a scowl. “And he is far more worthy a God than you will ever be.”

Vespera was a coward. She was not noble, she was not fierce, and she was not worthy to call herself the chosen deity of Terrastella. She was not worthy of their prayer, nor for them to shed their own blood or lose their lives in her name. Quite suddenly, Israfel felt that her journey to and as Warden of Terrastella was a mockery, a worthless cause, her own title slapping her in the face with a cold, brutal smack. Why did this witch deserve her noble ambition? Her fire? Her strength, cunning, and guile?

She didn’t. Oh, but she didn’t. Israfel would never bow to a God so cowardly, so spineless, nor so avaricious.

Instead, Israfel would use her title as Warden to protect her Court. Not in the name of Vespera the Coward, but for Asterion the Noble, Theodosia the Fierce, Fiona the Gentle, and Atreus the Sly. She would use that position to protect those worth protecting, not in the name of a spineless Goddess intent on teaching them a lesson they already knew. Perhaps she should have been the one to open her eyes sooner.

Letting her eyes speak for her, beacons of simmering vermilion, Israfel turned away with a flick of her lily-strewn tail. “Solaris. Let’s put your flames to better use. We have our own to tend to.” The Phoenix, fueled by her bonded’s ire, left the side of the gopher and propelled herself into the air, her colors growing into that pallor of ivory and gold as the flames began to disperse.

Perhaps Vespera’s ambition had been a noble one. Perhaps the lessons of ‘helping yourself also includes helping others’ could have been taught, but the end result appeared to have backfired completely, and Israfel would not stand in the presence of lies and deceit any longer.

over the moaning bones
of those who quit and chose to remain

With Vespera completely revealed, inky black and smoldering gold glowered at the Goddess as she spoke. Atreus was the last one to give much of a care about anyone other than himself, his Court and most of the people within it included, but this was different - because it affected him, too.

He watched with mild surprise and great amusement as the others gave their own words of disapproval, the pale soldier even going so far as to thwack her wing right against Vespera’s head which would have elicited a grin across his face under other circumstances. His eyes fell then to the gophers that had effectively surrounded the last of their resources, devouring it at a disgustingly fast rate of speed.

The Poison Master couldn’t help but scowl, his field of his fucks washed away by the last of Vespera’s bullshit.

Atreus stood strong against Fiona’s sudden weight against him, finally turning his head and resting his eyes briefly on her lavender form. Concern flashed in his eyes, and he looked once more back to the false deity. “And so can you,” he said firmly at mention of the gophers moving on, idly wondering if he might be smote where he stood but at least if that happened, he wouldn’t go hungry over winter.

”Come, now,” he instructed Fiona softly, a far more tender tone than the one used against Vespera, ”Let’s get you inside, darling.”

“Speaking.”

Vespera remains unchanging throughout it all, her face void of expression. Only her eyes continue to flash and roll in anger, all of her fury and self-righteousness on plain display. Let them go, she tells herself, watching as one after the other leave. Perhaps the next generation will be more aware.

And, she dared hope, better healers as well.

Without another word, the goddess turns her back on the rest of her Court. It’s a long journey back to where she came from, but the Vespera is energized by the setting sun. And come the morning, the Court will awaken to a more peaceful land, one where deities and gophers alike have disappeared from.
