“Lord Hajakha.”

A sticky wave of unpleasantness never failed to course through Senna’s body whenever his daughter bowed to him. It did not happen often, which meant that whenever it did happen both parties suffered an undisclosed amount, and neither ever chose to disclose it.

It took the nobleman an uncharacteristic moment to gather his bearings.

But gather them he did, and after easing the hood of his traveling cloak off his head, he returned her bow with brevity. Aghavni would not rise until he did, and the longer she remained prone before him, the more the unpleasantness sank its black-tipped claws into his neck.

He supposed she knew this.

“Aghavni. You rushed ahead and I lost you in the crowd.” Though Senna’s lips smiled harmlessly enough, the narrowing of his eyes suggested that his statement was really meant to be interpreted as a question. Miniscule signals like these were designed to test if the one he was addressing deserved any more of his time, and he should’ve left the habit behind when he left the confines of the court.

But as he had taught to his daughter many years ago, you never really left the confines of the court.

And he had taught her well, for her answer was given in an elegant tilt of the head to the little girl — who he hadn't thought to notice — standing besides her. The courtly signal for “you should know her.”

“And who is —” Senna paused when his eyes traveled far enough down to see the little one’s face. Because he did know her.

“Lieve’tel.” Vikander’s resurrected daughter. The nobleman sank into yet another uncharacteristic gathering-his-bearings silence. The last time he had seen the child had been almost exactly two years ago, resting upon the silk of a coffin. He supposed Vikander had told him about his success when he’d spoken to him last, but to see her for himself…

His momentary silence was, he hoped, understandable.

You feel as if you’ve seen a ghost, came Nestor’s prickly, yet relentlessly curious, voice. Have you? If you have, don’t keep me in suspense. This island looks disappointingly normal, which is to say, a ghost sighting would give me the excitement I am lacking.

You’ll see her later, was Senna’s exasperated reply.

He did not miss Aghavni’s inquisitive gaze on him when he lowered his head to the bright eyed, wondrously living Lieve’tel.

“Your father is a good friend of mine. I am pleased to meet you at last.”

in a lovely garden walking
two lovers went hand in hand;
A utopia awaits, the heartbeat of a new world (a strange world) just at the end of the bridge.

It echoes their footsteps that pitter patter over obsidian and pearls. Through the night the steady beat drums on and on. It is a clock, telling them all you still stand, you still live. Sleep is a stranger to the mare set on fire, the woman of light and hope and unbridled determination. Amber eyes almost glow, almost rage, almost burn as they follow the line of bodies again and again and again. Each one becomes familiar, almost as familiar as the pale, dappled man beside her.

Eik tempers her unease, reins in the need to move and act and be sure all are well. Has the sea swallowed any? Restless eyes flicker again, counting heads, counting bodies, falling back again and again to the man up front. The man with a pale girl beside him, guarding him. For a moment, Moira Tonnerre feels her eyes narrow and something awful, something ugly, gnawing at her heart. Is this Jealousy, she wonders? Dark hair is damp upon her cheek - from sweat or sea-spray, she cannot tell you.

Pink tongue darts out, parting sanguine lips, splitting a red sea to rewet it. Again, she wonders how her mouth is so dry when they are surrounded by mile upon mile of water.

The night goes on in a restless wonder, an unease, a need to go forward (not back, never back). And then... Silence. It frightens her like a mother dying, like a brother off to war, like a sister spurned. Heart stutters in her chest, and she looks to Eik. Eik, who asks her what she wishes to do. Where they are to go. There is no hesitation, no thought. Only once answer is available and simple and obvious. So she smiles, "Toward the future, will you go with me?" the Pegasus asks.

And it is an unleashing, his nod. So they move again, side by side, toward a new dawn and a new land. What splendors will it hold? What wonders will she unearth? Perhaps new tonics and plants for poultices... Her mind reels for a moment, only one, until red shoulder brushes against dappled grey. Blushing, kohl lashes cover amber eyes surrounded by black (so strange, so seemingly wrong, so alien and lovely). "My head doesn't seem to be here," is her only apology, but she brushes along his shoulder again. Softer, more aware, back with Eik in the present.

fear is the mind-killer.
fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.

T
here through the night, a steady body and a beating heart to keep her calm and keep her at bay, Juniper is unsure exactly how she lost her King. For a moment frozen in time, the world closed in and opened up, her sky disappeared as mile upon mile of water grinned like a drowning, drunken fool. It tried to pull her close, to hug her tightly. Then he spoke, then he distracted the pale girl, the holy girl, from the terror of the sea and all its horrors. Such open spaces were awful. Unlike the heavens, water so great and terrible offers only death to Juniper.

Green eyes close and she prays to Vespera that all will be well. Words are inward, silent, for no living ears should hear them - not such an intimate request, such a moving speech cannot be for mortal ears and mortal mouths.

So the crushing of bodies and rushing of bodies to reach greedily for pearls as the heart of the island stops and opens, as its splendor and richness is born before their very eyes with the rising of the red dawn, awakens her and frightens her. One wrong move, and then they all would die. Toppling into mile upon mile of endless, depthless water. Pale spine contracts, phantom hands running along sparrow-boned ribs, shivering even though there is the pressing of bodies, the swelling of excitement tangible on the air.

Juniper is almost terrified. Then, she sees a spotting of black along the beach. He does not go swarming like worker bees into the island, eager to see what the gods have given their creations. Instead, judgmental black eyes scan the sands as though they hold the answer to the world.

And how Caine is dissatisfied with what he finds.

Curious and in need of distraction, kohl-rimmed eyes follow curving muscles and rolling shoulders. They arc along black wings, and before she knows it, Juniper has walked up to his shadow. Her own pale pinions ruffle and shiver, shaking off condensation sitting too long on fine, down feathers. "Your frown is too big for your face, I'm afraid it might fall off. And what shame that would be," Juniper chirrups, brows pulling together as teeth worry lower lip. "Do you always look so closed?" For her people are not closed, they are open and bright and ready. In that moment, Juniper misses her sisters and cousins and mothers most of all - not these strange birds that sing off-kilter, not the pearls from flowers and berries and vines that melt into the silencing of a strange heart. None of this matters, none save the frown that is too big and the man that is wholly dark and brooding.

a solid gold life sliced off at the roots

A moon is following her.

It is unsettlingly incorporeal, insubstantial to the point that its silver is interrupted by the pattern of the green leaves underneath. It bobs noxiously at her fetlocks. It is a constant afterthought in the back of her mind, both draining and refreshing — the magic takes her energy but replaces it with satisfaction, gets her heart to thrumming extra-loud. She’s tried to make pets, of different kinds — a snake to keep her company, or a bird to watch overhead — but living things still hurt too much. So the moon must be good enough.

Without her mother, or Elif, it’s easy to get lonely. O hasn’t really seen either of them since Raum took over. She should be worried, but she isn’t; she would feel it in her heart (or her third eye) if either of them were dead, she thinks, or even injured. Perhaps they’re even here, following the path to the island just like she is. O stretches her head high and glances over the crowd as she moves deeper into it, seeking them out, but only a few of the faces look familiar — Caine, Aghavni. An ochre hood.

She’s missed the heartbeats of the fruits. By the time O slinks and shoulders her way to the front of the crowd the ivy has fallen away, nothing more than a suggestion of what was once alive now laying dead on the black rocks. Yards ahead the cobble-cracked lava sinks into a paradise too pretty not to be evil — O’s breath catches in her narrow chest as she looks at it. Miles of clean white sand stretch against the ocean, and beyond it the land turns into a patchwork of different shades of green, a jungle stretching to brush up against the cloudless sky.

Yet something sinister hums through the wind, the leaves, the sand. O pauses for a moment on the crux of the bridge.

But people are crossing, and she has never been afraid; she only unhooks the hurlbat from her side, and follows.

my roots run deep into the hollow
Antiope had not waited at the bridge, before that endless wall of ivy. She had returned to Denocte, to the cobblestone, fire lit streets, despite the yearning of the lioness in her bones. She had returned to whatever life she had here, if one could call it such.

She had, until—

Until the first equine came back, telling to all who would listen that the wall had gone and that there was a strange, mystical, magical land beyond it. This, above all things, is what had drawn Antiope back to that bridge. The bridge that stretched for miles into the sea that shifted and changed with the waves.

So she crossed it again, across each strangely see-through pass and over each dip and rise, even where it looked like the ocean would rise up and claim it. And when she reached that place where the bridge stopped and a wall of vines had once stretched endlessly in all directions, she kept going.

On the outside the island appeared the same as any other she had seen. Sand that swept into the ocean and grass that spread beneath trees that stretched into the sky. But upon closer inspection, Antiope saw the abnormalities within. The birds that did not look quite like birds, fruits that looked exotic but dangerous, plants too bright and too knowing.

Oh, how she could get lost in this place that looked like a world but held a lioness within.

How long had Eulalie stood there with her son at her side, with the others who had traveled from Delumine, waiting and watching the wall of ivy? How many had gone up into the sky to search and peered down into the sea, to try and find the end? There had been none. And then the sound had started, and at first she had mistaken it for her own heart, uncertain and thrumming.

But it had been the berries, all of them, all across the vines. Like a hundred, a thousand, a million hearts. It had grown to a crescendo, louder and louder until Eulalie hadn’t been able to hear even her own thoughts. Was her heart beating alongside them?

Then they had fallen open, dropping pearls like seeds across the bridge, into the ocean. The quiet was almost worse than the incessant sound, and then when the first equine pointed out the place where the ivy started to wilt. They had gathered and waited and watched, seeing the world beyond expose itself moment by moment. She could not hide her wonder. What would they find when they finally stepped beyond?

everything you are
is everything i need
you're everything to me

Fiona had only braved the bridge for her people, for Atreus standing at her side as he was. She had crossed it and faced the (truthfully) disappointing reveal that nothing had been at the end of it. Until there was, until the moment that the ivy started to come down before them like a curtain slowly, slowly falling.

Atreus shifted closer to her and she leaned into the comfort and warmth of his presence as the feathers of his wing brushed against her. She breathed a little easier, taking the strength that he gave her. She wasn’t sure what to expect, wasn’t sure what she wanted to find, but Fiona hoped that whatever they would find on the other side of the wall was good.

Fiona thought that they all deserved a little bit of good after all the things that had happened recently and all the things that were threatening to happen on the horizon. But she couldn’t help but worry that even if there was a haven there, waiting fo them all, it could never be trusted. The Dusk champion, once, might have believed whatever she was shown. But now she knew that some things were too good to be true.

and he keeps waking up
but it's not to the sound of birds

Grey went in the night, for how little he slept and how long he wandered. He went in the night, when the world was quiet and asleep and he was so wide, wide awake with the shifting shadows inside him that would not let him rest.

He walked the long, lonely, strange path to the island everyone was talking about and paused when the beasts in the ocean stirred the surface. Their shadows were hidden in the dark midnight sea, but their bodies crested the water and their fins, and above all that, perhaps, their hunger. Their want. He could feel it. He could feel them wanting his flesh and his blood.

For awhile he stood there, watching, with the moon looking down with her bright silver eye. Did she judge him, for the thoughts that weighed down inside his head? At last, Grey turned away from the promise swimming just below the surface and toward the island’s silhouette in the distance.

And then he enters a land that is too otherworldly, with sand that glows in the moonlight and waves that seem to whisper to him and creatures that look out at him from the shadows as if they might know what is in his heart, with eyes too keen. Grey has tested the magic of this world once before, and he is not ready to do it again, not here in the dark with blackness in his veins.

The unicorn turns and walks away, back across the bridge, past the monsters who call to him from the deep, to the land he is familiar with. And yet the island haunts him, in his dreams and in his thoughts. Something, oh something is not right about it.

“Speaking.”

Samaira might have lingered longer there, at the wall, her curiosity begging her to find a way past. She might have, were it not for her duties at the hospital that she both enjoyed and could not abandon. The people of Terrastella needed her aid and she sought to learn everything she could in the art of healing. From here, in the sky, she could do none of that.

So she had turned back, with Alaunus at her side, but her curiosity had not died and she kept an ear open every time someone mentioned the bridge or the wall or the wonders they thought were beyond. It was this that gave her notice to the shift in the air, the change in the world. Thus, with any who had gathered to go explore the island that had appeared beyond the wall, Samaira landed on the beach with her bonded and prepared to explore it for the first time.
