BEXLEY BRIAR

Is this a joke, you confrontational piece of shit - one venomous gripe and Bexley is on her feet, pelting full speed over the sand toward the Day Court with Maxence’s call of to arms, Solterra! still ringing with deafening force within both ears. Hardly a season for those who had been injured to recover, and here they are again. Her thoughts are bitter, but her heart belongs to the desert, to this court, and of course she heeds the call with nothing more than a moment of curious pause. Half-caked in sand and hair spinning wild circles around her face, the champion does not think to prepare, the monstrous, familiar rise of the teryr’s body enough to send her into something of a frenzy. The air is thick with the scent of it, with sand being beaten high into the sky.  The roar that comes from its lungs is enough to shake her to those ivory bones. And besides that, it’s landed in the middle of their hub: if they don’t kill it soon every one of their ancient buildings will be completely, utterly fucked, and Solis help her, Bexley does not want to waste her time rebuilding them from the ground up.

She comes to a hasty stop at the edge of the clearing, so quickly that sand sprays up from the places her hooves help her slide to halting. With one quick glance she places many of the Solterrans she knows as having already taken their places in the fray, and attempts to pin down a place she’ll actually be of use: both wings are taken, and without the ability of flight, or even a horn she could use to rush it, her options are limited. Bexley’s heart pounds a sickeningly hard, quick beat inside her chest. Her head spins and the edges of her vision are fuzzy as she pants, trying to find her center, some semblance of balance, a middle point, but in the chaos it’s impossible. For a moment she stands frozen, unsure. Then, thank Solis,  a sudden rush of instinct pulls at her ribs, and Bex chases it at a startling sprint.

Rushing past Eden and Vadim, slender body weaving through the mayhem of moving parts, she thinks of birds and deer and hollow bones and launches her full weight at the closest of the teryr’s legs, sharp-curving hooves outstretched.

She had been prowling the expanse of desert that lay before Solterra’s capitol when, for a fleeting moment,  the light of day vanished from above her; a shadow loomed overhead, its shape eerily similar to that of the teryr slain long ago. Avdotya paused. The last she had seen of it was a set of bones and rotting flesh, and perhaps that was exactly what this new threat had witnessed. Perhaps revenge now fueled its burning fire.

The mare’s brows furrowed with a hint of frustration. She nearly prickled at the sound of Maxence’s battle cry. Avdotya was in no mood to battle hare-brained birds bent on avenging a beloved, though she heeded his call in one great leap that pushed her to a gallop.

By the time she arrived, the teryr was already swarmed by a horde of horses ready to attack. Some had even began the onslaught, reaching for whatever pound of flesh they could get their teeth on while others stood back to evaluate. The desert viper remained upon the sidelines herself, watching the scene as it played out before her heated gaze; with so many on the offensive, it would almost be foolish to simply jump into the fray.

Not a minute more and the woman’s spear found its way to her grip, at the ready and thirsting for the blood of a teryr once more. This time, however, she sought to hinder the beast’s sight and aimed directly for its beady old eye.

Solterran Enemy

The King, the dust settling around his beaten and scarred wings, perched with his offspring huddled closely at his haunches in the middle of the makeshift arena clearing. Massive beak gaped, intent eyes filled with tempered rage.. and for a moment, the great beast wondered if anyone would even consider answering his call. There was a dry staleness, a quiet, for a brief instance.

And then, like ants emerging from a burst nest, they swarmed. The beast's head jerked up in a swift moment, and in that sudden period of time, he realized that such an unplanned attack may not have been wise. First, the painted stallion who slew his Queen. Second, the unicorn with a glass horn, @Voltaire. Third, the white warrior @Eik. Fourth, the inky unicorn, Ki'irha. Fifth, the flower-crown warrior, @Eden. Sixth, the hulking scarred beast, @Leviathan. Seventh, the collared Emissary @Seraphina. Eighth, the molten sage, @Vadim. Ninth, the bard @Rordan. Tenth, the young golden warrior, @Bexley. Eleventh, the one whose spear made his Queen scream her last, @Avdotya..

It was almost overwhelming, intimidating. But as quickly as such a thought came, it was snuffed from his mind - HE WAS KING. And he would take what they took from him.

Massive wings heaved upwards in one foul, swooping motion, his head tilted up to regard the pegasus that flew above him and then landed before him. With a powerful gust that would easily knock back those anywhere close to his massive form, he was hefted into the air. Up, up, up.. cresting towards the sun until the unforgiving light enveloped him and shrouded him in daylight.

Outnumbered.. but while they were the ants, he was the poison that would take out the nest at it's most important point.

The massive beast swooped away from the Solterrans and other attackers, narrowly avoiding broken wings, slashed skin, and punctured organs. Two of his offspring sprung into the air as quickly as their father... but one hesitated a moment too long. The Solterrans surrounded the wee babe - the runt of the litter, no less - and within moments he was pummeled into nothing more than a heap of mangled carcass.

Tempered rage threatened to break through the tough leather hide of the King's skin... and with a bellowing shriek, the prehistoric beast dropped himself from the sky. Swooping closer and closer to the group, he singled out the one who he would direct all his rage towards... the painted pegasus, standing a little bit away from the crowd after the other Solterrans descended upon his offspring.

Massive beak parted, the terrible, eardrum-piercing shriek came as he neared... and in one swift movement, Maxence was clasped between the razor sharp edges of his beak. Wings heaved again, thrusting downwards and descending the massive prehistoric beast into the sky once more, his two remaining offspring hot on his heels as leathery membranes glided them off towards the bright beacon in the sky.

He had what he came for. That's all that matters.

When the Solterrans realize what has just taken place, an eerie silence will fall over the Day Court. The mangled carcass of the runt will be temporarily forgotten, and they will stare towards where the Elder Teryr went.. only one thought on their mind: What now?

And then, all attention will turn to the two remaining members of the Regime: @Avdotya, and @Seraphina. The gazes would be expectant, oddly piercing... as if they scream 'Where do we go from here?'

The Elder Teryr king heaves himself back up into the air to narrowly avoid missing all of the Solterran's attacks. Two of his offspring follow suit, while the third (the runt) is pummeled by the Solterrans as they descend upon where the King used to be.

The Elder Teryr king goes high into the sky, using the blinding sun as a cover, and then drops suddenly back towards the Solterrans. While they pummeled the runt offspring, Maxence was farther away from the group than he should have been.. and the Teryr king came at him, beak open, to clasp him around his midsection.

With his prize wedged firmly between his serrated beak, the trio of Teryr's fly swiftly away from the clearing, taking Maxence, the Day Court Sovereign, with them.

At this time, it is unknown whether or not Maxence has survived the attack. Most will assume the worst, and presume he is dead. All attention will turn to @Avdotya, the remaining Regent, and @Seraphina, the remaining Emissary... waiting.

When the dust had settled and all that remained were the stunned faces of those witness to the king’s capture, an important question now stood before them: what next?

Avdotya herself still had her eyes peeled upon the skies, unsure of what to make of what just happened. Her mind lingered on Maxence and the certain death that awaited, but it was not long until any attachments she had to the stallion were severed - just as they had been with every other soul that had perished before her eyes. She carried no interest in mourning; there were pressing issues to be dealt with now in Solterra, and the snake of a mare knew that decisions needed to be made.

As Regent, she bore a heavy hand in what was to be done next. Many would expect her to be the next in line for Solis’ crown… but there burned no desire to oversee the nation within her. In fact, as the seasons passed, Avdotya grew to abhor her place in a regime she once sought to dismantle. This was not where she belonged and her very heart knew that well; however, that was not to be known by the loyal citizens of the Day Court. Not yet.

Her gaze drew itself to Seraphina for a moment, then back to the crowd gathered around them. ”Solterra’s throne lays empty once more,” she said flatly, “let it be known that it will remain that way until Seraphina and I have discussed matters in private quarters.” Quite the conversation awaited the pair, and the sooner it could begin the better.

Ki'irha

Dust and sand flew as those great wings began beating, and Ki’irha sprang away, narrowly avoiding the swinging appendages. More had arrived, and as the largest beast moved away, the others moved upon the smallest offspring that remained, unable to become airborne quick enough to avoid the onslaught. Ki’irha moved in, but did not take part in the killing, and she was nearly nauseous at the eagerness with which the others killed the young. Still, perhaps that was how these people were. She knew nothing about these beasts, so perhaps it was for the best that this particular child was culled before allowed to grow large enough to become a problem.

But that didn’t end it. Unsure whether the killing of the child was what enticed the king of the teryr to return, or perhaps it was his plan all along, but it swooped, avoiding the cluster of warriors, and instead stole away the great stallion that had called them all to arms. Ki’irha’s head snapped around, looking with wide silver eyes as the man was plucked off of the ground, but before she could react, they were gone, way too high to begin to pursue. All the starlit could do was watch as the king was captured.

When the dust and sand settled and the others around her could put the pieces together, the attention was turned to a blackened and scarred woman. Ki’irha, standing to the back of the gathering, simply watched, and suddenly she felt foreign, like she didn’t belong within this troubling time. The other woman spoke of Seraphina, and stated they would discuss the situation further. Ki’irha stepped back, staying within the back of the group, and finally once all began to disperse, she dipped her head respectfully, shared sympathy for the herd’s loss, and slipped away, escaping the gathering, heading quickly into the long journey home.

Just making an exit. She lingers just long enough to hear any final remarks then leaves. If any further conversation is needed because she’s just a random Dusk Court person, let me know an I can pop her back in.

DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI

--

In an instant, the world broke -

One moment, the Solterrans were recovering, building, growing, sealing the wounds that Zolin had left behind; the next, she found herself reminded of how ephemeral and fragile life in the Mors was. As she stared at the disappearing shape of the teryr, a scream of Maxence welled up in her throat, but she knew that it would do her no good to shriek after someone who might well already be dead. Seraphina could only watch the disappearing shapes of the teryrs, hooves rooted in the sand, as she felt dull shock – ants crawling under her skin, a numbness, but no grief, no loss, no tears to shed – wash over her in waves. As she stared up at that blindingly bright sky, the heat and light blurring her vision, Seraphina felt nothing but the pricking taste of copper in her mouth.

Damnit, they could have done-

She didn’t have time to waste on the past, however; what was done was done. Now, as she felt the eyes of the gathered Solterrans on her back, Seraphina found herself reminded that she had a fragile peace to maintain. She turned, seeking out Avdotya with her mismatched gaze. (At the very least, she thought grimly, two of the regime remained.) The dark, serpentine mare was quick to speak to the crowd, and she nodded her confirmation to her words, then added, “I will set a pyre to burn at dawn. Attend if you wish.” It would be irresponsible to offer no closure to the sovereign’s death – she suspected that some of the court might wish to mourn.

For now, however, she had matters of succession to attend to.

LEVIATHAN
the supernova

The world had gone from a flurry of attack to suddenly what was the worst. Leviathan was no beast of the worst though, and his ears flew back as he turned his massive bulk toward the two remaining in control, his lip curling and bloodied front hooves pressing in to the sandy blocks under them. He left behind marks of his steps, and drew his lips back in distaste at both Seraphina and Avdotya.

Idiots, the both of them.

His ruby eye turned to them with a long and hard glare before he shook his mighty head and he drew himself up to his height. "Then stay here and cower in the walls if you must." He wasn't sure if Maxence was alive, but he'd be damned if he allowed the body to be torn apart by those beasts. "Even if he didn't surprise, getting the body back would be a damned good thing to do. No need to feed those creatures, and he died a warrior. A better funeral. But by all means, huddle together and whisper to one another what you will and stay behind the walls."

His words were accompanied by a sneer, and he turned his body, eyeing the runt's carcass before turning an eye skyward. Finding the nest wouldn't be that hard; it had to be in the canyon, where the first was killed, and he'd be damned if he just let them think they were victorious.

"If anyone cares to join me, you're welcome to. I plan to finish what the beast started." His horned head turned and he snapped his tail, surging in to motion, his forehooves and feathering still covered with the blood of the young Teryr that had been unlucky enough to be caught. So long as the beast couldn't fly from whatever hovel it was in, it was as good as dead.

oh boy
