Below Zero

my frost philosophy will put no curse on me

The wind was a dull hum to her ears as the mare stood in the shallows of Terminus Sea, glowing spheres staring out at the wave caps out at sea. There was a call, a siren's song; that the wind seemed to deliver to her finned ears, the whispered welcome of the depths, the flirtation of the water trying to entice it's bel of the sea back into it's depths. It was a song Below Zero had issues ignoring. Indeed, the aquatic mare was already ankle deep into the water, as the night wrapped the world in it's ebonite canvas, shadowing the earth in its' shade. Well, shadowing all of earth except the bit the mare was on. The mare herself was like a lighthouse, bright and vibrant in the night. Her body glowed with it's own luminescence that cast the surrounding waters with a cyan hue. Part of biology that made traveling the depths of the ocean at night . . . that much easier.

And the waves sung. Every soft crash against the sand, every taste of salt upon the wind, every gull cry, every swooshing of water against rocks, every spray of seasalt against her limbs, every part of the ocean seemed to engulf her senses. Her eyes watched the white caps roll, her ears caught the sounds of crashing waves, her muzzle took the taste of salt from the air, her hide felt the sea water's touch, and her nares took in the scent of the waters that encouraged her to dive in. One hoof stepped deeper into the waters, followed by another step, and another, and another and another. Soon the water was rushing around her knees in an eager drive to draw her deeper, pull her into deeper waters as the waves rolled back out to sea, encouraging her to follow. Deeper, the wind chimed. Deeper, the waves cried. Dive Deeper, the siren song encouraged. Dive deeper: Bel gave in. Her walk through the sands shifted, her limbs already drawing up, her body shifting in it's posture as her tail pumped through the water, carrying her deeper. The water hit her upper limbs, then the bottom of her belly, then her chest, then her neck. And with a cry that was purely aquatic, like the song of a dolphin or a whale beaconing others close, announcing her return, Bel dived.

This was no awkward disappearance below the waves, however. Bel was a creature, a lady of the seas, and it showed in the graceful dive into the waters. Her body had picked up speed, her tail flicking down as her body angled up and she was driven out of the water with the force of that powerful tail. Her body immediately angled in a way that most other equine were likely incapable - her spine far more flexible to allow the graceful movements required as an aquatic creature - an alien creature. Her body curved back towards the water, her head angled down, her neck curving slightly and her body taking the shape of a half circle as she dived back to the waters. Her head submerged first, gills flaring as she breathed deeply into the water, opening eagerly even as her lungs snapped shut off. The upper ridge of her dorsal fin, and neck followed her head, her body completing the arch as her shoulders, and chest disappeared below the waves as well, followed by her hind quarters. The last bit of Bel visible from the water, cutting through the waves with practiced ease was her fluke like tail, the glow dimming at the water as she dived deeper beneath the waves, until the glow disappeared out of sight, and the water's surface once more turned still but the slow ebb and flow of the tide. The ocean had it's lady back, it had no intentions of letting others note she'd disappeared below.

Bel's form cut through the water, nostrils and ears closing off to keep water from entering them, a natural reaction for her species when they took a dive into the oceans. Her gills flared, a cascade of bubbles leaving them as she breathed deep, her form cutting through the water with aerodynamic precision. She was lean and thin, and it made the water push around her light a bullet through air, as she traveled deeper, only spurred on by the powerful tail pushing her through the water. Her glow highlighted her surroundings as she navigated between coral reefs, seamounts and other rocky outcrops. Her glow provided her all the visual she needed in the darkness, her glowing dual set of eyes working together to keep her aware of her surroundings, and still she traveled deeper, traveled to see, traveled to explore, traveled to dive. Her body arched over the continental slope and dived into the deeper waters, her body angling to counter the pressure and pull that tried to encourage her into deeper waters. She arched and expertly wove through the water, her tail powering through her dive as she righted herself, and slowing herself to a stop as she stared out at the open ocean.

A deep breath was drawn in, water flooding into her mouth before bubbles were released from her gills, the water forced from her body as oxygen flooded her system. She glanced to the left, to the right, and then straight down, eager to see what to  explore first. Fish swam around her, some avoiding her, some curiously looking closer. She snapped at a few of the smaller ones, her jaws just barely messing the treat, and slightly sharper teeth towards the back of her mouth briefly visible, before she turned her attention back to the task at hand. To explore.

Her body angled downward, and with another sudden slap of her tail she as diving through the water, her body twisting into a spin, and a creeing-bubbling laugh that echoed through the water like a song left the muzzle of treader, mists and whisps of water that left her spine merging with the water around her, causing it to warm slightly in response to her joy and delight. Her head was tossed, her tail whipping out as she creened to the left. A chirping cry of delight left her muzzle again, answered by the cree of dolphins in the distance, the translation lost to the waters, but the greeting universal. It was true the two species, Dolphin and Vapor Treader; spoke nearly the same language, but while the base language might be similar, they had gradually differed apart until it was through an awkward handling that the species communicated, with gestures and expressions and sounds rather than anything close to communicating speak. But Bel was willing to believe the cree had been a greeting of sorts, and it warmed her to feel the welcome of the sea.

She arched her body again, heading in another direction as she aligned herself with a school of large tuna as they swam, twirling around them in an eager play that they mostly ignored. Bel's features twisted to a pout as she gave of a few more crees and chirps of her own language, nudging a tuna in an attempt to play. The call was answered by the foreign laughing chirps of a closer pod of dolphins, and with an eager greeting, Bel allowed them  to pull her into a game of tag as she swam with them, her glow highlighting each one, showing a few differences in terms of scaring on fins and bodies, or subtle shifts in their mostly grey coloring. She swam with them, playing tag and having fun before she bid goodbye to her new friends and once more headed further down into the waters, the light getting dimmer, and the number of fish slowly decreasing, and the thrill grew greater in Bel before slowed at the edge of a rip in the ocean floor, a deep trench. Her eyes gleamed with excitement, with wonder, with an eager curiosity. Peering deep below, Bel prepared herself for the dive. Who knew what she'd encounter today!
