Katniss has always preferred the snow-covered mountains to the sand dunes of the desert. The cold had always been inviting to her, welcoming her. She had always lived in places where it snowed so it was no different now than before. The small glen was supposed to be beautiful. She supposed that before what happened to Metaphor, she might have called this particular morning beautiful. But since that day where her better half had been taken from her, there were very few things that she would knowingly call beautiful.

Hooves trudge through the snow, her body uncaring that the temperature was well below freezing, that her muscles shivered in an attempt to keep warm. It did not occur to her that her sweat was forming icicles on each strand of her. Her body was numb to that “biting” cold. She felt nothing. She felt no physical discomfort from the weather not did she feel the emotional pain that she should be feeling. She felt nothing.

Body weaves in and out of the trees, her body blending so perfectly against the black death of the trees. The flowing of her hair and the crisp sound of her feet trudging through the snow are the only thing that give away her position. Breath is hot as it leaves her nostrils, leaving behind a fog to add to the already dense morning fog.

She comes to a clearing, on the other side of the meadow from Seraphina. Unbeknown to her that the other is just on the other side of the tree line.

She begins to step into the clearing, her eyes seeing something strange. Her mind tells her it is a figment of her imagination, but her eyes see not only the form of another, but wisps of light that seem to grow brighter by the second. It reminds her of Metaphor’s ball of light that he gave to Kibou. But that light was small and steady. These lights seemed to dance in the afternoon sun. It draws her closer, closer to the light and closer to the stranger. “What are those…” She had never seen such a thing before. It was not just a ball of light, but she wasn’t exactly sure what to call them. They were all one shape and many all at once. Eyes look to the other, wondering only briefly if she too was seeing the creatures. The lack of sleep she had been experiencing as of late had sometimes made the mare see things that really did not exist. How was she to know if these were real or just another hallucination?
