The point of no return had never been an enemy of his until now.
He felt it for days now. It constantly edged him forward, southbound and over the great peaks of the Arma Mountains. He wasn’t entirely sure where he was going, but he knew that this endless yearning to belong again would cease the moment he arrived. So he pushed on, recoiling from the uncertainty in his every step along the way. He would never doubt that tearing his roots from the ground of his homeland had been the right choice, but it seemed to be leading him nowhere. Of course, going back was not a option, but then standing still would be just a lethal.
Damn that soothsayer for pitting him against ambivalence and conviction. He shook his head as if to shake away the thoughts and pressed on. He started down a path that had become deeply entrenched from heavy traffic and relentless rainfall, his footsteps sinking in to drowned clay with every step. Well-worn paths usually lead to some point of interest. Not this one. His rugged trail eventually came to an edge and then curved to trace the mountainside. From there, it only grew more narrow until it connected with a freshly faltered mudslide that still trickled with rushing water. He frowned at it and dropped his ears back, visibly annoyed.
It was rather symbolic for his current state of being. Going nowhere. Standing at a dead end, forced in to aimless wandering which was a rather new concept to him. Blyse exhaled, and then stepping over to the edge, the stallion dived over the cliffside. He plummeted for a moment then unfurled his wings to catch some lift and then leveled out with a single pulse. Two or three more and he was surging upward and in to the low hanging clouds.
Now this was clarity.
South of the mountains he could see a vast lake, like an ethereal mirror of the lavender and orange-hued sky. Beyond it lie…a city? From this distance, it was hard to tell for certain but he would know soon enough. At last, a true heading. He did not know what he expected to find there. This wasn’t a battle, the outcome wasn’t black and white. This was chance. This was gamble. This was entirely out of his comfort zone. All he could do was what the white mare told him to: pray. Resolute, Blyse descended in a spiral, dropping in one wing and letting gravity tug him to the earth.
If first impressions are the most lasting, then he knew he would certainly not forget this moment he was assaulted by the sweltering heat and a despairing sight that was his first impression of Novus. No, this was not what a wearied man would hope to see after crossing the ocean—desert, as seemingly vast as the sea but half as pleasant on the eyes. His saving grace was that a city lie along the shoreline that he traced alone, where occasionally he was cooled by an errant wave that lurched upon his legs. For too long it looked just like a mirage. So much, that he wouldn’t allow himself to believe his eyes until he was walking among the crowds within where his other senses could be satisfied.
He traded glances with a few market patrons, but mostly everyone saw through him as they mulled about paying mind to their business. Blyse was plagued with discomfort as he looked at their faces, each one as unfamiliar to him as the last. He never realized how much he took for granted the familiarity with his clan. The only thing here that remotely resounded with his past was the slow, steady wail of a blacksmith’s hammer and a single scent which played in the air like a musical note that was hard to discern from the rest. These were not his people. He had no people,he needed reminded. Blyse had given that up on what most might perceive as a whim.
The overwhelming road ahead was just beginning to dawn on him. He needed to find his people. He needed a plan. He needed to strategize just how he was going to find his way in to a position of safety in a land he knew nothing about, but where to even start? That mare, Celeste, she called herself. She was the soothsayer that brought him here, the mare with the gift of Vision who saw a truth that so resonated with him he would betray his own people to follow her.
But then, of course, she left him in the desert.
How sweet. She did part with some cryptic instructions to a place called Denocte and that was the only known value to him in this entire equation. Blyse pushed through the crowd and stole the first alley that took him away from these strange faces. What he found on the other side was a shrine of sorts. Head-high walls of stone stood before him, worn and cracked with barely legible inscriptions. Flowers, trinkets, and other small tokens of love were strewn at the base and idols as unfamiliar to him as the equine of this land stood upon pedestals. He had a guess as to who the idols were for.
“Solis.”
He murmured that name, trying it out for the first time. He had only heard it in the Soothsayer’s rambles. She spoke about the Gods a lot in their brief time together. Mostly she spoke about her own. Rarely she spoke of his, which was a strange concept to him—belonging to a God he was not yet sure he believed in.
Novus is a strange place, he's learned. A place of gods and current disaster, of things that have rocked the mortal planes and sent them panicking and careening through their lives. He has heard of many things happening as he has stayed on the outskirts, of catastrophic tsunamis and fires, of snow in deserts, and of sinkholes opening up and swallowing horses whole.
It's been a wild year, and he's glad he's been on the edge of things, lingering about the outskirts, listening. This is not his place, not his home, but... isn't it? He has no home, not that he's called for a long time, and... well. Shouldn't he be helping, in some way? Dawn Court was what he had chosen, what he had lingered through. Shouldn't he have been helping? He knows no faces there but he should have helped with what had gone on, right?
A frown, and his ears tuck back as he leans his head down, resting his nose in against fresh grasses, pulling at them with his lips mindlessly. He wants to know more, but.. he has seen so many lands disappear under such circumstances. Would this place go too? Just as he had found it, would it leave before he could even settle and attempt to call it home?
Was this it? His new home? He had roamed in to these lands what felt like ages ago, and had picked a court out of random, one that had matched his ideals more than the others. While he had no idea where to go, Dawn seemed to be the best. Delumine. He had kept to himself for so long, had heard so much on the outskirts of the society of Novus, that he had listened in and heard about each one.
This had been his choice.
It seems to be ash cloaked and the trees are recovering from what looks like fires, but he knows there have been strange things happening over the entirety of the lands. This isn't the strangest. He takes in soft breaths as he walks, glimmering hooves brushing through ash and grass, kicking it up before he's finally in the court itself, meeting cobblestone, his tail flicking behind him and blue eyes blinking. He's a glimmer in the spring sunlight, a shining oceanic presence against a backdrop of stones and greens. An oddity, but aren't they all.
He feels more out of place, but he keeps to himself, his head dropping a moment before he only exhales and walks. He's uncertain of who or what he may come across, but it's about time he begins to explore what he calls his home, isn't it? To poke his nose in places and find out what he can about it, to mingle with those he will get to know and get to see grow older as he stays stagnant in the turn of the years.
She has wandered out to the meadow now, the green expanse of speckled flowers budding and maybe sometimes blooming in the youth of spring, the occasional drift of warm air through the lingering winter cold is so welcoming to all the little lives, new and old. Mesnyi likes that it is beautiful here, that is why she chose to stay, and looking upon the meadow in spring she has no regrets. Regret is not Mesnyi’s way; it is better to move on, always, to leave it behind and be free of the unfortunate things. “That is the key to my happiness,” she’ll say, but how long can you be on the run? She does not consider herself as “being on the run.” So she says.
There are some clouds streaking the sky, bright and white like angel wings, and the sun is warm on her back and the winds not too strong, but enough to cool her flesh where it grows warm and sometimes give her a little shiver. She likes this in-between weather, but she itches in the grave silence of the natural world and wishes, just a little, that she had someone to talk to. The city can be so overwhelming, as can the quiet.
She had been in this place called Novus for some time now, following along with her caravan as they performed at strange little settlements and within the walled cities of the various courts. Her companions would linger yet - Novus was too far away for a brief excursion only - but she had departed from them, drifting into this place called dawn, her time of the day, she knew in her heart, and claiming herself to be one of its residents. She was not yet important to anyone here, but she would be, soon, she was certain. And so, she stepped into the court, the center of its doings, it seemed, where the equines of this place gathered and she stood right in the middle of it.
…What else was she going to do?
She pawed at the ground and looked about at the different people passing by, stallions and mares and fillies and colts, some pretty, others not so much, but no one truly caught her eye. No one seemed to notice her. Not yet. Truly, all the times she had ventured out it was with a companion in mind, and here she was, alone, not familiar enough with this place to really know what she ought to be doing for fun. She sighed, and puffed out her chest - Mesnyi would not be discouraged yet, for all her beauty and fortitude.

I understand and agree to all of the following: Immortality is a Restricted Item and until staff have formally approved this item, it cannot be used in Character posts. Once the staff has redeemed Immortality, my character will remain frozen at whatever age they are currently. I can choose to expand immortality to allow for accelerated healing or "evading (most) death," but my character must have some type of mortal weakness (such as type of wound inflicted, weapon used, etc). If I wish for my character to no longer be immortal, I must contact staff and will not receive a signos refund. If I wish to make them immortal again after reinstating their mortality, I will need to re-purchase the Immortality item from the Agora.
Eik takes a roundabout path, but eventually it leads him to the library. It gives him a chance to get to know the night court on a deeper level. He imagines the shape of the court, the materials and layout, all of these silent things have gently shaped the people who live and die within these walls. There are so many corridors he wants to walk down, so many untold stories that lie just around the next corner, always close but out of sight.
Solterra is built on secrets and Denocte on mysteries. The two are undeniably different, but also strangely similar. Eik does not quite feel at home, but he feels... something close to it.
As he walks, he learns about this place by looking and imagining, and when he is ready he slowly opens his mind and reaches out with his magic. Well, it is not really reaching out so much as staying still and waiting for thoughts to come to him. A merchant nervously counts and recounts the day's sales. A sad-eyed mare is thinking of Terrastella and what state it might be in. He looks into the images her imagination creates, great sinkholes swallowing home. The fields I learned to run in, gone. The kingdom I raised my children in, gone, the-- He withdraws as the imagery becomes hard to bear, blinking his eyes heavily. He is not sure if the tears on his cheek are his or the stranger's until a few moments later when he is fully untangled from her.
Not for the first time, his heart is heavy but his eyes are dry. He does not use his magic for a while after that.
All this to say he is tired-- mentally, physically, magically-- by the time he makes it to the library. And Moira Tonnerre is nowhere to be found. It is disappointing but not terribly surprising... after all, she could not always be here.
He inhales and can just barely smell her among the paper and candle wax. There are others, too (-- Isra?) and a happy-bird smell (crow friend?) and the ocean through the open windows. He turns his attention to the books, and pours himself into selecting one to read while he waits for Moira to return.
